Matthew Perry, known for his iconic role as Chandler Bing on the beloved television series “Friends,” passed away on October 28, 2023, due to an accidental overdose of ketamine. His contributions to tackling addiction and promoting recovery remain pivotal through the foundation that carries his name. All proceeds from the upcoming auction will further these efforts, expanding access to care and fostering supportive communities for those grappling with addiction.
The auction promises to offer a range of personal items that reflect Perry’s life and career, showcasing memorabilia he cherished during his journey. Noteworthy highlights include a selection of 26 scripts from “Friends,” featuring memorable episodes such as “The One With Ross’s Tan” and the series finale, “The Last One.” Additionally, fans can expect to see a unique photo album from the show, whimsically titled “The One with the Last Supper,” which contains a letter from co-star Jennifer Aniston.

Heritage Auctions has garnered support from Warner Bros., which has contributed several items to the auction. Among the donations is a cast-signed pilot script for “Friends” and a signed script for the series finale. The studio is also offering two tickets to the premiere of “The Batman Part II,” set to release in 2027, along with a framed 3D portrait of Perry’s “Mattman” character, stemming from a memorable appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” in 2016.
Other auction items include a 1995 Screen Actors Guild Award that Perry received for his role in “Friends” and his personal replica of the yellow peephole frame, synonymous with Monica’s apartment on the show. Furthermore, a selection of art pieces that Perry valued throughout his life will also be part of the auction.
Lisa Kasteler Calio, CEO of The Matthew Perry Foundation, emphasised the importance of the auction in furthering Perry’s mission. “Matthew believed that addiction should be approached with compassion and scientific understanding, rather than stigma and silence,” she said. The auction is designed not only to raise funds but also to ensure individuals facing addiction do not have to confront their challenges in isolation.
Net proceeds from this significant event will be directed towards various initiatives of the Matthew Perry Foundation, including the Matthew Perry Foundation Fellowship in Addiction Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. The funds will also support Grassroots Recovery Grants aimed at aiding frontline organisations and the Healing Appalachia music festival, which celebrates recovery.
To provide an opportunity for fans and collectors to view the items, the auction will be previewed in person at Heritage Auctions’ Beverly Hills showroom beginning on May 18 and continuing until May 29. The online and in-person auction will take place at Heritage Auctions’ Dallas showroom on June 5, with proxy bidding commencing on April 30.
As the auction approaches, it serves as a heartfelt reminder of Matthew Perry’s enduring impact, not only on the entertainment industry but also on those combating substance use disorders. The event offers both an emotional connection to his legacy and a hopeful future for many seeking help in their recovery journeys.
