A man from Florida has been charged with aggravated child abuse, accompanied by a hate crime enhancement, following allegations that he assaulted a five-year-old boy due to his perceived sexual orientation. Andre Brown Jr., 33, from Davenport, was taken into custody on 3 May, as confirmed by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

The investigation was initiated after a nine-year-old girl, who was reportedly in Brown’s care, disclosed to her mother that he was mistreating her and two other children. In a concerning message, she informed her mother, “I’m scared, he’s whooping him so hard, I’m scared,” according to the sheriff’s report. Her alert prompted authorities to take the situation seriously and examine the claims made by the young girl.
Through interviews with the children involved, investigators learned that Brown became enraged with the five-year-old boy for what he perceived to be “gay” behaviour. Allegations suggest that he threw the child to the ground multiple times and subsequently lashed out at two other children due to past grievances, beating them with a belt in a disturbing display of violence.
Authorities examined the children’s bodies and discovered visible injuries consistent with being struck by a belt. Among the children, the five-year-old was found to have the most severe marks, indicating the extent of the violence he had endured. The nine-year-old girl and another boy also bore injuries, but none appeared as serious as those of the younger child.
During questioning, Brown allegedly made disturbing statements to police, claiming he intended to “beat the gay out of him if possible.” When pressed further, he stated that since such a transformation was unachievable, he would intensify the beating, highlighting a troubling mindset and justification for his violent actions.
Brown has been formally charged with aggravated child abuse with a hate crime enhancement, and for resisting arrest. The court records do not clarify whether he has entered a plea in the case; however, an arraignment is reportedly set for June.
In response to the incident, Sheriff Grady Judd described the assault as a “brutal and hateful attack on a defenseless child.” He emphasised that there can be no justification for such actions and assured the public that efforts would be made to ensure justice is served. He also expressed a commitment to providing the affected children with the safety and support they require.
