Denis Leary’s dedication to supporting firefighters was on full display at the 10th Annual Denis Leary Firefighter Challenge, which took place on May 1 at The Rock, a New York City Fire Department training facility. This yearly event is not only a fundraiser but also an immersive experience crafted to raise awareness and financial support for the nation’s firefighters.

Since its inception in 2000, inspired by the tragic Worcester Cold Storage fire that claimed the lives of six firefighters, the Leary Firefighters Foundation (LFF) has made significant strides. In just over two decades, the foundation has distributed nearly £18 million in grants aimed at providing necessary resources and training to fire departments across the United States. Leary, an actor and comedian, has been a long-time advocate for firefighters, stressing the need for adequate funding and support.

This year’s challenge attracted a host of celebrity participants, such as Lauren Sánchez Bezos, Pete Davidson, and Michael J. Fox. They engaged in hands-on training activities designed to replicate the experiences and challenges firefighters face on duty. Leary expressed his admiration for the bravery exhibited by firefighters, stating, “I love to help these men and women financially, because we need them.”
One of the pivotal moments for Leary that cemented his commitment to firefighting was the loss of his cousin, Jerry Lucey, in the Worcester fire. Lucey had raised concerns about inadequate funding for firefighters, an issue that continues to resonate today, as the cost of outfitting a single firefighter with appropriate gear can reach £16,000. This sobering reality underpins the importance of the LFF’s activities, which have provided equipment and training for over 370 fire departments to date.
Inspired by his time filming the Emmy Award-winning series “Rescue Me,” which showcased the life of firefighters and ran from 2004 to 2011, Leary launched the firefighter challenge. He believed that the training sessions he participated in while preparing for the show could translate into a meaningful fundraising event. “It’s a great event and people love it,” he shared, reflecting on the challenge’s success.
Over the last decade, the Firefighter Challenge has not only garnered national awareness for firefighters but has also raised essential funds that benefited departments across the country. In its latest initiative, training sessions focused on crucial skills ranging from search and rescue to extinguishing propane fires. Highlights included a meal prepared by renowned chef Rachael Ray—an LFF board member—who has played a key role in supporting the event.
The foundation stands out as the only one in the United States dedicated to funding a comprehensive array of resources for firefighters. The LFF’s contributions include not just larger expenses such as mobile command units and high-rise simulators, but also smaller essentials like thermal imaging cameras and clothing that help remove harmful chemicals from gear. Leary emphasises the importance of ensuring firefighters have access to the best equipment and training, reinforcing that their safety translates to community safety.
As Leary reflects on the foundation’s past achievements, he remains acutely aware of the continuous need. Each year sees an increase in grant requests, underscoring the ongoing challenges faced by departments. “I plan to continue this work until there is no longer a need,” he affirmed, despite acknowledging that the likelihood of fully funding every fire department in America is slim.
The LFF’s work is only made possible through the generosity of donors, and Leary encourages anyone interested in supporting the cause to contribute. “Every dollar makes a difference,” he stresses, inviting public engagement in the ongoing mission to help America’s firefighting heroes.
The Denis Leary Firefighter Challenge continues to bridge the gap between entertainment and charitable cause, providing a platform for celebrities to engage with and honour those who dedicate their lives to serving the community. Following the event, Leary expressed a mixture of pride and nostalgia, grateful for the journey while recognising the road ahead remains long.
