Casey revealed to PEOPLE that she and Dylan had long envisioned a family together. “This is what we always wanted,” she shared, reflecting on their shared dreams of parenthood. Just weeks before his death, Dylan had expressed eagerness about the possibility of starting a family, even purchasing a pregnancy test for Casey, suggesting that they were at a point in their relationship where they were ready to try for a baby.

The loss of her fiancé, a young journalist with Spectrum News 13, was devastating. Dylan was killed in a mass shooting incident in Pine Hills in February 2023, an event that left Casey grappling with profound grief. “When I found out the man I was so deeply in love with was murdered, it was something I’ll never forget,” she recalled. The emotional impact of that moment still resonates with her, invoking flashbacks of the life-altering news.
Having met at an ABC affiliate station in Gainesville in 2020, Casey and Dylan quickly developed a deep bond. Their shared professional paths turned into a romantic relationship, which blossomed over shared experiences, including weekends spent in St. Augustine. As they grew closer, discussions about raising a family became part of their plans, especially once Casey completed her conversion to Judaism, a commitment that was important to Dylan.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, with the overwhelming weight of grief threatening her ability to function, Casey found solace and support in Dylan’s family. She moved in with them, discovering a shared bond formed through their collective sorrow. “Dylan’s dad promised to take care of me if anything happened,” she recalled, illustrating the strength of their connection during such a painful time.
Determined to honour Dylan’s memory, Casey made the brave choice to pursue posthumous sperm retrieval shortly after his death. This process, which involved the delicate act of collecting sperm only hours after losing him, was fraught with anxiety. She expressed her fear that they might not succeed in the timeframe required. “To retrieve viable sperm after death, it has to be collected within 24-36 hours,” she explained, detailing the logistical challenges involved.
Once the retrieval was successfully completed, the road to becoming a mother was filled with obstacles. After finding a surrogate within three months, Casey faced multiple egg retrieval procedures and several failed embryo transfers. “There were days I would cry because I wasn’t sure if I would ever become a mum,” she admitted. Yet her perseverance paid off, with a successful transfer occurring on 18 July, leading to the birth of baby Dylan.
Now, as she embraces motherhood, Casey is committed to ensuring her son knows about his father. She plans to engage with him about Dylan’s life and legacy, cherishing the moments they have together. Despite the bittersweet nature of this journey, Casey remains hopeful. “Dylan is very much alive in my heart and now in our son’s heart as well,” she stated, reinforcing the enduring impact of her fiancé on their lives.
In a world that can often be challenging and tragic, Casey’s story serves as an inspiring reminder of love’s resilience and the deep familial bonds that can transcend even the most heartbreaking circumstances. As she navigates this new chapter, Casey is determined to create a joyful life for her son, ensuring that the memory of his father will always be a part of their family’s story.
