Bannister recalls vivid memories of her grandmother, particularly a summer day when Marika taught her to swim. The bond between them was poignant, symbolised by an enamel medallion worn around Marika’s neck – a delicate Ukrainian icon of Mary. This meaningful piece of jewellery became a constant source of comfort for Bannister, particularly after inheriting it at the tender age of sixteen following Marika’s passing.

When Bannister became a mother at the age of 33, she began wearing the necklace daily, believing that its presence would also provide protection for her child. However, this sense of security was shattered when, at the age of 47, she realised it had vanished while dropping her son off at a friend’s house. The loss felt as profound as losing her grandmother all over again, igniting a flurry of frantic searches.
In that moment of despair, Bannister retraced her steps, searching through her belongings and checking every possible location in a desperate bid to find the necklace. Each failure to locate it compounded her heartbreak, and the author was left feeling helpless as she grappled with the memories that the necklace held. She attempted to contact the Uber driver, wishing for the chance to explain the necklace’s significance and the connection it had to her late grandmother.
As Bannister boarded a train back home, her thoughts oscillated between despair and hope. The delicate piece of jewellery, with its rich sentimental value, could now be with anyone. Thoughts circled around the countless passengers who had been in the back seat of that car since her loss. She reflected on her grandmother’s teachings about faith, kindness, and the enduring power of love, reminding herself that even in her darkest moments, there’s always a glimmer of hope.
To her astonishment, a message arrived just as she settled into her seat: the Uber driver had found the necklace. Overjoyed, Bannister shared her emotional gratitude with him, a heartfelt response that acknowledged the significance of the piece and its connection to her grandmother’s legacy. The driver, despite the language barrier, responded kindly, offering to return the necklace to a friend’s home, showcasing a compassion that resonated deeply with Bannister.
This encounter left Bannister pondering the nature of human connection. Was the driver simply fulfilling his duty, or did he also share a similar bond with someone in his past, perhaps a grandmother of his own which inspired his kindness? The experience served as a reminder of the unexpected goodwill that can flourish among strangers.
The eventual reunion with her grandmother’s necklace was not just a recovery of a lost item, but also a poignant reminder of the strong ties that transcend time and loss. Bannister’s story highlights how items can become vessels of love, connection, and memory, enduring long after the person who once wore them is gone. It illustrates the profound impact of faith and the kindness of strangers in moments of vulnerability.
Ilona Bannister’s upcoming release, “Five,” is set to be available on May 5. Her narrative not only reveals her literary talent but also encapsulates the power of personal stories to connect us all, reminding readers of the importance of family, hope, and community.
