Acclaimed actor Scott Patterson has recently shared his insights on the beloved television series “Gilmore Girls,” a role that has defined much of his career, despite his initial refusal to watch the show during its original run. The 67-year-old star, who portrayed diner owner Luke Danes, finally sat down to indulge in the series over 20 years after it first graced screens, motivated by the launch of his podcast, “I Am All In.”

During an interview with Mike Jerrick on FOX 29’s late-night show, Patterson shed light on his absence from the viewing audience. He conveyed that his long hours on set left little room for leisure. “Because I made the sausage for 14 hours a day, I didn’t want to eat it,” he remarked, emphasising that his focus was primarily on the demanding nature of filming. He continued, “When you’re on a TV series, you barely have time to eat, sleep or take a shower,” which inevitably limited his ability to partake in the finished product.
Patterson’s role as the love interest to Lauren Graham’s character, Lorelai Gilmore, spanned seven seasons from 2000 to 2007, yet curiosity about the show did not strike him until the inception of his podcast in 2021. The project provided him with the opportunity to watch the show for the very first time and offer commentary about the episodes along with behind-the-scenes anecdotes.
He recalled how he pitched the idea to iHeart, revealing that the network expressed surprise at his unfamiliarity with the series. “They felt sorry for me, so they gave me a show because they felt bad for me,” Patterson quipped. Once he did begin to watch the programme, his perspective dramatically shifted. “I loved it. I understood what the fans were talking about,” he confided, praising the show’s unique blend of humour and emotional depth.
Patterson acknowledged the creative prowess of the show’s creators, Amy Sherman-Palladino and her husband Daniel, highlighting their rare talent. “They are two very unique creative minds and you know, they’re once in a generation people,” he stated, recognising how their background influenced the eclectic style of the show. This mix of comedy and reality is what makes “Gilmore Girls” stand out, according to Patterson.
He also described Graham’s portrayal of Lorelai as reminiscent of a “Borscht Belt comedian” navigating her life in the whimsical setting of Stars Hollow. In his eyes, his character served as a grounding force amidst her rapid-fire humour. “I was just sort of an anchor for the show, and to be a straight man to her jokes,” he explained, noting the challenge of delivering 50 jokes in a single episode, of which only half may register with viewers on first watch.
What makes “Gilmore Girls” enduring, Patterson believes, is its ability to resonate with audiences at different stages in their lives. “As they get older, they relate to other characters in a different way,” he shared. This multifaceted appeal enables fans to experience the series anew with each subsequent viewing, be it as a teenager or as an adult facing new life challenges.
The ensemble cast of “Gilmore Girls,” which includes notable names such as Alexis Bledel, Jared Padalecki, and Melissa McCarthy, contributed significantly to its charm and lasting impact on viewers. Patterson’s reflections highlight not just the intricacies of character dynamics but also celebrate the heartfelt storytelling that has kept “Gilmore Girls” alive in popular culture.
Through his newfound appreciation for the series, Scott Patterson has engaged with a dedicated fandom that has permeated the landscape of television, fostering a sense of community among its viewers. As he continues to delve into the episodes through his podcast, he invites fans to share in the joy and nostalgia that “Gilmore Girls” continues to inspire long after its conclusion.
