Broadway veteran Aaron Tveit recently shared his thoughts on the musical world he would like to inhabit in real life during a conversation with PEOPLE at the opening night of *Schmigadoon!* The acclaimed actor, who has enjoyed a successful career in theatre, made it clear that the vibrant environment of *Moulin Rouge!* holds a special place in his heart.

Tveit, aged 42, portrayed the character of Christian in the original Broadway production of *Moulin Rouge! The Musical* from its launch in 2019 until 2022. His performance earned him the prestigious Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical in 2021, cementing his status as a standout talent in the industry.
When asked about his preferred musical to step into, Tveit didn’t hesitate to answer, stating that he would choose *Moulin Rouge!* He spoke fondly of the late 1890s setting, claiming it to be an “amazing artistic time.” While he acknowledged the complications, such as tuberculosis, prevalent in that era, he remained captivated by the artistic spirit that defined the period, calling it a “special, special time.”
His admiration for *Moulin Rouge!* runs deeper than the mere enjoyment of its song and dance. Tveit met his wife, Ericka Yang, while they were both performing in the production. Their shared experience in the musical helped to cultivate a strong bond, and they celebrated their marriage in June 2025, now sharing a daughter together.
The couple has also collaborated on the widely popular Apple TV series *Schmigadoon!*, which has now been adapted into a Broadway musical. Reflecting on their experiences, Tveit remarked on the significance of filming the first season during the pandemic. He was especially grateful that he, his wife, and her brother-in-law were cast in the show at the same time, allowing them to travel together to Vancouver for the project. “It’s so surreal,” he stated, acknowledging the sense of luck they felt in being able to work amid global uncertainty.
The adaptation of *Schmigadoon!* from television to stage has been a source of excitement for Tveit, who described it as “amazing” to witness. He expressed pride that his friend Max Clayton is participating in the adaptation as Danny Bailey, a character Tveit once portrayed. “All of us who got to work on *Schmigadoon!* on television loved it so much,” he shared. The transition to Broadway felt like a natural progression for the “little town” that has now made its way to 41st Street.
In addition to his unforgettable roles in *Moulin Rouge!* and *Schmigadoon!*, Tveit has also made a name for himself in other productions such as *Wicked*, *Hairspray*, and *Grease: Live!*. Currently, he is captivating audiences in *Chess*, where he takes on the role of Freddie Trumper alongside notable performers Lea Michele and Nicholas Christopher.
As the curtains rise on *Schmigadoon!* and the excitement builds around his performance in *Chess*, Aaron Tveit remains a vital figure in the Broadway scene. His passion for musical theatre, evident in his choices and connections, continues to resonate with both audiences and fellow performers alike.
With Tveit’s dedication to his craft and his heartfelt reflections on his experiences in the musical world, he undeniably cherishes the art form that has shaped his life. Whether he is embodying the romantic character of Christian or celebrating new stories on stage, Tveit continues to leave his mark on Broadway, inviting audiences to join him in the magic of musical theatre.
