In Virginia, a devoted dog lover named Christine has shared the remarkable weight loss journey of her beagle, Boomer, who has transformed from an overweight pet to a healthier companion. Upon adopting Boomer, who had been living with Christine’s grandmother, he weighed an alarming 62.2 lbs. Christine, known on social media as Seafood Clowder, stepped in to help after noticing the challenges her grandmother faced managing the dog’s care.

Boomer was adopted by Christine’s grandparents in 2016, and while his early years seemed happy, a tragic turn of events—her grandfather’s death and her grandmother’s developing dementia—alarmed Christine. “We began noticing changes. At first, my grandmother insisted she was managing, but Boomer’s weight gain prompted us to intervene,” she explained. Christine was particularly concerned about her grandmother’s emotional attachment to her dogs, as they provided her with comfort during difficult times.
In efforts to assist her grandmother, Christine and her family experimented with various methods to manage Boomer’s weight, including portion control and hiring a dog walker. Unfortunately, when these methods yielded no results, they decided to take Boomer in temporarily. “We told her he had a vet visit, hoping to stall the transition until we could set things right for his health,” she added.
Upon taking Boomer to the vet, the family learned that there were no underlying health issues. The veterinarian confirmed that Boomer’s weight gain stemmed from overfeeding and limited exercise. They were advised to implement a more regulated feeding schedule to help him shed the excess weight. Christine recalled, “We reduced his meals from eight feedings a day to just two. Additionally, we introduced low-calorie treats to satisfy his snack cravings without the added calories.”
Sharing their journey on TikTok, Christine’s posts captured the hearts of many, turning Boomer’s story into an inspiring narrative of perseverance. However, she faced mixed reactions online, with some blaming her grandmother for Boomer’s initial obesity. Christine stressed that her grandmother’s intentions came from a place of love, as her memory lapses due to dementia often resulted in overfeeding. “She simply forgot she had already fed them. It was heartbreaking to witness,” Christine explained.
With Boomer living at Christine’s home, the family embraced a new routine. They began with short walks that gradually increased in length as Boomer lost weight and regained mobility. “Initially, he struggled even to stand or sit comfortably. It was challenging to see him in such discomfort,” she reflected. After nine months, Boomer has lost over 20 lbs, bringing his weight down to 39.8 lbs. He is now more active and enjoys outdoor adventures, a significant improvement from his previous state.
Christine has been overwhelmed with the support from her growing TikTok community, which has surged to 24,000 followers. “Initially, I was hesitant to share his journey for fear of judgement, but the encouragement we’ve received has been incredible. I wish I’d shared updates more regularly from the start,” she admitted. Their experience serves as a testament to the positive impact of proper weight management—a reality many pet owners struggle to navigate, especially for older dogs.
Despite Boomer’s ongoing progress, Christine noted that he is slower now than he was at his peak weight. Still, she remains optimistic about his future, aiming for him to lose an additional 10 lbs. “Boomer has made such strides. The day I took him for a short hike in Shenandoah National Park and he wanted to keep going was a proud moment for me,” she shared.
Christine’s story highlights the importance of compassion, understanding, and practical care in the bond between pets and their families. As Boomer continues to regain his health and vitality, his journey is a reminder of the transformative power of care and dedication.
