Elbie’s disappearance occurred on a Saturday when she slipped through a gap from her owner Jake Dobrin’s balcony. Her absence prompted Dobrin to put up posters around the building in a desperate attempt to locate her. In an effort to assist, neighbouring resident Fernando Westin took to the skies, employing a drone to survey the area in the hopes of spotting the missing pet. His perseverance paid off on the morning of Monday, April 27, when he successfully found Elbie trapped between the windows and metal bars of another apartment’s balcony about 130 feet away.

The occupant of the unit where Elbie was discovered, identified only as Marty, expressed his surprise at finding the dog in such a precarious situation. Having kept his blinds drawn all weekend, he had been unaware that Elbie was so close. “I opened up the blind, looked over the edge and there was a poor little bugger,” Marty recounted, in an interview with 7 News.
Once alerted to the situation, the fire department was called to the scene to conduct a rescue operation. Video footage captured during the incident showed firefighter Joel Spillane climbing the side of the building to reach Elbie, with gathered onlookers watching anxiously below. During his ascent, Spillane was determined to ensure the safety of the frightened animal, employing a leash and a safety tarp underneath in case of any mishaps.
Describing the challenging conditions he faced, Spillane acknowledged that Elbie was “a little bit stuck.” However, he noted that the dog’s calm demeanour significantly aided the operation. After approximately 20 minutes of careful manoeuvring, he successfully lifted Elbie into an apartment through an open window, prompting cheers and applause from the gathered crowd as the rescue came to a happy conclusion.
Following her retrieval, Elbie was reunited with her owner Jake Dobrin, who expressed immense relief and joy. “I didn’t know if I was going to see her again — so very happy,” he said, articulating the emotional rollercoaster he had experienced over the past two days. The reunion served as a reminder of the strong bond shared between pets and their owners, resonating with animal lovers watching the incident unfold.
This remarkable rescue operation highlights not only the quick response of local residents and emergency services but also the depths to which neighbourhood camaraderie can extend in times of crisis. It showcases how a simple act of vigilance, like flying a drone, can make all the difference in the world, demonstrating the power of community and compassion.
Elbie’s harrowing experience has not only left a lasting impact on her owner but also on the community, reminding them of the importance of looking out for one another, especially during pet emergencies. With such a happy ending, Elbie’s rescue stands as a heartwarming testament to resilience and collaboration, proving that sometimes, help can come from the most unexpected places.
