A woman from Delaware, Helen “Honey” Gorny, has bravely shared her journey after receiving a life-saving lung transplant, a procedure she waited almost two years to undergo. The transplant involved a rare paediatric organ donation from a 12-year-old boy, which has significantly transformed her life. However, the circumstances surrounding the donation have left her with mixed emotions, highlighting the complexities of organ donation and the fragility of life.

Gorny’s health struggles began in 2011 when she was diagnosed with sarcoidosis, a condition that causes clusters of immune cells to accumulate in various organs, commonly the lungs. Her initial symptoms were identified by a friend, a medical professional, who noticed her breathing difficulties while running. Shortly after, she was faced with an additional diagnosis of breast cancer, which she fortunately caught early and dealt with by undergoing a double mastectomy. Gorny reflected on her experience, expressing gratitude for how smoothly her cancer treatment unfolded, while her doctors remained increasingly concerned about the deterioration of her lung function.

For years, Gorny managed to maintain her floral event design business, even as her condition worsened and necessitated the use of oxygen. Despite her struggles, she worked hard to keep her illness hidden from her clients, describing the challenge as living a “double life.” She recalled moments of joy and excitement with clients, all while struggling with the reality of her declining health. Her determination was strong; she recognised her stubbornness as a driving force that allowed her to push through obstacles.

However, her situation took a dire turn in early 2023 when Gorny faced acute kidney distress, forcing her to confront the real possibility that she might not survive without a transplant. Admitted to the intensive care unit at Temple University Hospital, she ultimately prepared herself for the worst, including bidding farewell to her children. After enduring 20 months on the transplant waiting list, Gorny received life-changing news—a suitable donor had been found.
In a remarkable twist, due to Gorny’s petite frame, she was matched with lungs from a paediatric donor. Despite her joy at receiving a transplant, she also grappled with the knowledge that her new life came at the tragic expense of a young child. “It’s a very conflicting feeling to be feeling better than you have in a decade and hearing that it came at the price of a child,” she reflected on the bittersweet nature of her situation.
Medical experts noted that her case was particularly unusual since lungs from young donors are typically designated for children. Gorny expressed her gratitude for the medical team behind her successful transplant, emphasising the generosity of her donor’s family. “This miraculous thing happened to me, [but] really had very little to do with me,” she stated, highlighting the selflessness involved in organ donation.
Since undergoing the transplant, Gorny has returned to many activities she feared she would lose forever, embracing exercise, travel, and cherished moments with her loved ones once again. With her 60th birthday approaching, she remains focused on cherishing every single day, driven by a desire to make the most of her renewed chance at life. “I’m doing all the things that you might want to put off,” Gorny shared, noting how each additional day feels like a precious gift.
Gorny’s experience underlines not only the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity but also the vital importance of organ donation. Her story is a powerful reminder of the impacts that such gifts can have, both for recipients and the families of donors. As she continues her journey, Gorny aims to inspire others to appreciate life and consider becoming organ donors, highlighting the profound connections formed through these acts of generosity.
