Katie Couric is set to embrace the role of grandmother once more, as her daughter Ellie prepares to welcome her second child. The celebrated journalist shared the exciting news during the Runway for Recovery event on April 30, 2024, held at New York City’s Pier 60. Couric revealed that Ellie, who is already mother to two-year-old son Jay, is expecting her newest arrival on June 5.

At the event, which focused on supporting women and families affected by metastatic breast cancer, Couric expressed her joy but also noted a hint of trepidation. She mused about how her toddler grandson, Jay, might react to the arrival of a sibling. “I’m not sure how exciting it’s going to be for Jay to welcome a new baby into the house,” Couric remarked. “TBD on that. But that’s really, really exciting.”

Reflecting on her life experiences, Couric emphasised the importance of cherishing significant milestones. After losing her first husband, Jay Monahan, to colon cancer in 1998, she has come to appreciate moments such as births, weddings, and graduations even more deeply. Couric poignantly recalled how her husband missed out on many of these moments, as their daughters Ellie and Carrie were just six and two years old at the time of his passing.

“My husband missed so many milestones with our daughters,” she revealed. “He missed watching them grow into these incredible young women, missing proms, parent-teacher conferences, college acceptances, graduations, and weddings. He also missed the birth of our grandson, Jay, who is named after him.” She reflected on the bittersweet nature of these memories, celebrating her daughters’ accomplishments while mourning her husband’s absence in significant family moments.
Couric, who has two daughters, Ellie, 34, and Carrie, 30, has found strength in her family and work. She appeared at the Runway for Recovery event as a model, using her platform to raise awareness and funds for the cause. The occasion was not just a charity event for Couric; it also served as a reminder of the resilience of those impacted by cancer, echoing her own journey through loss.
In terms of her current life, Couric shared her gratitude for her family’s well-being, stating that after experiencing loss, she treasures every moment spent together. “I’m just grateful that everyone is doing well and feeling well and has found fulfilment and purpose,” she said. “When you experience loss… it does give you a greater appreciation for every single moment… and every happy occasion.”
As she looks ahead to the summer, Couric has plans to enjoy time at the beach and refine her skills in pickleball, a sport she has taken a liking to. “I’m going to be playing a lot of pickleball too, because I am a pretty good pickleball player,” she remarked with a sense of humour, clearly enjoying the lighter aspects of life.
In her personal life, Couric has found love again after Monahan’s passing. She married John Molner in 2014, who has two children from a previous relationship. Together, they form a blended family that now includes the new generation of grandchildren, thereby expanding the family dynamic.
With exciting times ahead as they prepare for the new baby, Couric remains focused on creating cherished memories with her loved ones. Her journey highlights not just the joy of family but also the resilience that comes from overcoming loss, making every moment with her children and grandchildren even more meaningful. As she balances her career, family life, and personal passions, Couric continues to be an indomitable presence in both her family and the broader community.
