James Middleton, the younger brother of the Princess of Wales, has openly discussed the profound influence that dogs have had on his mental health, especially during challenging periods in his life. In an appearance on ITV’s *This Morning*, Middleton shared his experiences of living with clinical depression and how his beloved dogs provided him with vital support.

At 39 years old, Middleton revealed that it was his late dog, Ella, who played a crucial role in helping him navigate through his darkest moments. “Dogs have sort of played a really instrumental part of my life,” he stated, highlighting the unconditional love that dogs offer without any expectations in return. His attachment to Ella became especially poignant during his struggles with depression, fostering a connection that allowed him to express emotions he found difficult to vocalise around people.
Reflecting on his struggles, Middleton recounted instances where he found it hard to relate to others. He explained, “During a time when I couldn’t connect with humans, I couldn’t translate how I was feeling. And somehow I think Ella understood how I was feeling.” He described how his therapist encouraged him to talk to Ella during therapy sessions, which helped him articulate feelings he had long suppressed.

The loss of Ella in 2023 left a lasting impact on Middleton, who described her as the dog that ultimately saved his life. He acknowledged that the companionship shared with her and other dogs was invaluable during his battle with mental health issues. This deep bond led Middleton to pen a heartfelt memoir titled *Meet Ella: The Dog Who Saved My Life*, which details his journey and the role dogs played in his recovery.
Middleton candidly addressed the stigma often associated with mental health, admitting that he had initially struggled to understand why he was feeling this way. “I used to brush it under the carpet and think, ‘What do I have to be, sort of, depressed about?’” he shared. However, as he delved deeper into his emotions, he came to realise that mental health challenges can affect anyone, regardless of their circumstances. This understanding compelled him to take responsibility for his mental well-being and to be vocal about his struggles, even moments when he felt “suicidal”.
The support from his dogs has transformed how he manages his mental health. He remarked that their presence encourages him to rise each day, venture outside, and engage in physical activity, regardless of the weather. “They get me up in the morning. We go for a walk, whether it’s sunny or pouring with rain; we’ve got to go outside,” he explained, acknowledging how this routine has made handling his mental health “a little bit easier”.
To honour the role that dogs have played in his life, Middleton has created a Pet First-Aid Kit, designed to help pet owners be better prepared for emergencies. This kit includes essential tools, such as tweezers for removing ticks, and reflects his desire to give back to the pets who enrich our lives. He emphasised the importance of pet owners being equipped to care for their animals, stating, “As pet parents, we have a responsibility. There are things that we can learn at home that can help dogs in the time between calling the vet.”
Middleton’s openness about his mental health struggles and the therapeutic role of pets underscores a critical message: support can come from the most unexpected places. His story serves as an important reminder of the profound impact that animals can have on our emotional and psychological well-being. Through his initiatives, he not only seeks to help dogs but also encourages others to confront their mental health challenges and seek the help they need.
