Alyssa Reader, a 27-year-old from Phoenix, faced an unimaginable ordeal beginning in June 2024 that changed her life forever. Despite initially dismissing her symptoms, her determination to seek medical help led to a life-saving intervention after she experienced multiple organ failures and cardiogenic shock.

On that fateful Friday, Reader noticed she wasn’t feeling quite right and texted her mother to express her unease. After attending a friend’s going-away party, she woke up the next day barely able to move. Sensing something was seriously wrong, her family took her to urgent care, where doctors were puzzled by her elevated heart rate. Having received assurances that everything was normal, they were advised to monitor her situation at home.

However, things took a turn for the worse. The following morning, she insisted on returning to the emergency room. This time, tests revealed troubling signs that her heart was failing, and she was quickly admitted to a cardiac care facility. “Before you know it, there were 15 people in my room,” Reader recalled, describing the frantic response from medical staff as they discovered she had no measurable blood pressure.

Reader was then diagnosed with cardiogenic shock and multi-organ failure, conditions that can prove fatal. She was airlifted to HonorHealth Scottsdale Shea Medical Centre, where doctors warned her family that she had only a slim chance of survival. An ECMO machine, designed to support critical heart and lung functions, was urgently employed to assist her struggling heart.
Though Reader’s condition was dire, after a week, doctors decided to reassess her heart function. Much to everyone’s astonishment, her heart began to recover. Despite this positive turn, the battle had come at a significant cost: the decision was made to amputate three of her limbs due to compromised blood flow. Despite not fully grasping the extent of her situation, Reader exhibited remarkable resilience, anchored by the support of her family and hospital staff.
A pivotal moment of hope for Reader came when one of the nurses washed her hair and provided a comforting scalp massage. It was in that seemingly simple act that she felt a glimmer of hope, recognising her will to live and adjust to this new chapter of her life.
Her experience and the tattoos she bore on the only limb spared from amputation — her left arm — began to shape her outlook. Significantly, the art conveyed messages of resilience, luck, and an overarching sense of transformation, symbolising her journey through adversity. A fundraising event, inspired by these tattoos, raised nearly £7,500 to aid with her medical costs, showcasing the strong community support she received throughout her ordeal.
Following months of hospital stays and rehabilitation, Reader gradually regained her strength. She has since embarked on a journey of relearning basic skills and adapting to her life as a triple amputee. Reader disclosed her aspirations in therapy, focusing on regaining mobility with the help of prosthetics, and engaging in activities such as volleyball — a sport she cherishes deeply.
Upon returning home after six months in the hospital, a heartwarming welcome from her community laid bare the impact of her ordeal. Friends and neighbours displayed signs of support, and the reunion stirred emotions as they celebrated her remarkable recovery.
As she navigated her new reality, Reader initially felt apprehensive about stepping out into the public eye, concerned about the attention her amputations might draw. However, her worries dissipated when she acknowledged that others were not focused on her physical changes but rather on her spirit and tenacity.
Social media has played an instrumental role in Reader’s recovery, offering her an avenue to connect with others who have faced similar challenges. Through platforms like TikTok and Instagram, she shares her story, encouraging individuals to trust their instincts and seek help when they feel unwell.
Reflecting on her journey, Reader emphasised the importance of being proactive in one’s health, reminding others to listen to their bodies. Her perseverance and the strength derived from her community have been fundamental to her healing process. As she continues to look ahead, Alyssa Reader remains hopeful, embracing her life with resilience and determination as she prepares for what the future may hold.
