A 15-year-old boy from Topeka, Kansas, is currently undergoing treatment for severe burns sustained while rescuing his family from a devastating house fire. Je’raevion King suffered third-degree burns over 25% of his body during the incident, which occurred on April 16, and he is now receiving specialised care at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City.

According to reports from local news station WIBW, Je’raevion’s mother, Charae King, and his two sisters were asleep when he noticed the house filling with smoke. Realising the danger, he quickly sprang into action. The smoke was emanating from a pot that had caught fire in the kitchen. In an attempt to extinguish the flames, Je’raevion grabbed the pot but slipped, resulting in multiple burns to his body.
Nicki Richardson, a parent of one of Je’raevion’s football teammates, described his injuries and the extensive medical treatment he has already required. “He has significant third-degree burns on his bicep, forearm, and from his hip down to his toes,” Richardson explained. “He received immediate care locally before being moved to the burn unit, where he has undergone several surgeries, with more surgeries anticipated.”

The strain of his medical condition is compounded by the fact that Je’raevion’s mother is 30 weeks pregnant. “She has to divide her time between being at the hospital with Je’raevion and preparing for the arrival of her new baby,” Richardson added, noting the significant toll such circumstances can take on a family.
To aid the King family during this challenging time, Richardson launched a GoFundMe campaign that has so far raised over £5,000 (approximately $6,000). The funds are intended to help alleviate the financial burden that comes with medical expenses, travel, accommodations, and the loss of income while they focus on Je’raevion’s recovery.
The community surrounding Highland Park School is rallying behind the Kings. “We felt it was essential to support this family in their time of need,” Richardson affirmed. The local community has come together to help raise money and provide emotional support, underscoring the impact of the incident not only on the family but also on Je’raevion’s friends and teammates.
Richardson observed that the incident has resonated deeply with Je’raevion’s classmates and fellow athletes. “The kids are realising how quickly life can change,” she said. “They might think, ‘That could have been me.’ It’s a powerful message that they are taking to heart.”
Je’raevion’s positive attitude throughout this ordeal is commendable. “His catchphrase is, ‘The comeback is always stronger than the setback,’ and his friends are championing that spirit,” Richardson noted. “They are motivated to play hard in his honour while he focuses on recuperating.”
This tragic event has not only highlighted the bravery of a young boy but has also fostered a sense of solidarity within the community. As Je’raevion continues his journey toward recovery, the outpouring of support from those around him serves as a reminder of the strength garnered through collective action in times of adversity.
As the King family navigates this challenging chapter, they are imbued with the hope and encouragement of their community, who are committed to standing by them as they face the road ahead.
