In a poignant end to a storied legacy, Beidelman Furniture, a family-owned establishment in Naperville, Illinois, officially ceased operations on Wednesday, April 29. This closure marks the conclusion of a remarkable 165 years in business, a milestone that reflects the shop’s deep roots in the community.

On April 16, the company took to social media to announce this bittersweet decision, revealing that their final day would take place two weeks later. “We will miss YOU!!” the family wrote in a heartfelt Facebook post. The announcement was paired with a vintage photograph of the store adorned with the sentiment, “Thank you for 165 great years!”
Over the years, Beidelman Furniture has not just been a retail outlet; it has been an integral part of Naperville’s identity. Many long-time residents, like Mary Towers, shared their nostalgia for the store’s presence. “We’ve lived here since 1972, and it’s just always been here. It’s always been a part of Naperville, part of downtown,” she remarked. The shop’s history is intertwined with that of the town itself, embodying both change and continuity over a century and a half.
First opened in 1861, Beidelman Furniture proudly claimed the title of Naperville’s first elevator, and the store itself has undergone various transformations throughout its long history. Interestingly, in addition to being a furniture retailer, the location also served as a funeral home, adding another layer of depth to its long-standing legacy.
The long family lineage overseeing the establishment is a story in itself. “Great-great-great Uncle Fred Long started it in 1861 on this corner, and he was married to a Beidelman,” explained store owner Lana Beidelman Heitmanek. Her narrative is complemented by the fact that she and her daughter Katelyn represent the fourth and fifth generations to manage this cherished business.
The decision to close was not taken lightly and stemmed from the growing challenges faced by independent businesses in downtown Naperville. “It’s become very hard to operate downtown Naperville as a little independent furniture store,” Katelyn revealed. Her insights underline the broader struggles faced by small businesses, particularly in the face of increasing competition and changing consumer behaviours.
Irrespective of the challenges, the family retains fond memories of the store’s charm, especially the iconic elevator. Katelyn recalled how many patrons fondly remember taking rides in the elevator as children, often feeling a mixture of thrill and trepidation in those formative experiences.
In a reflection on their legacy, Lana quoted poet E.E. Cummings, stating, “We’re going out with a bang, not a fizzle.” Such sentiments resonate with a community aware of the significance of Beidelman Furniture’s presence, knowing that it goes beyond just retail; it has shaped countless lives and memories over generations.
As the doors close on this chapter, the Heitmanek family leaves behind a store that was not just a business, but a cornerstone of Naperville’s community and history. The closing of Beidelman Furniture serves as a reminder of the impermanence of local institutions and the power of heritage in shaping community identity.
