He was immediately transported to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery. Unfortunately, Rivas slipped into a coma for three days before succumbing to brain injuries, passing away on April 24 at 2:04 p.m.

Colleagues and family members have remembered Rivas as a man of extraordinary courage and selflessness. A GoFundMe campaign established in his honour has raised over £180,000, eclipsing its initial target of £10,000. Friends and loved ones have confirmed that Rivas is survived by his wife, Erin, and their four children, whose ages range from 4 to 30. He was also known to have ties to the culinary world as the son of the Chicago White Sox chef, Roy Rivas.
The investigation into the collision is ongoing, being conducted by the Buffalo Grove Police Department’s Traffic Unit with support from the Major Crash Assistance Team. As of now, law enforcement has not issued any citations or made arrests related to the incident. Buffalo Grove Police Chief Brian Budds publicly praised Rivas, saying, “Orlando Rivas represented the very best of our community. His dedication to the safety and well-being of students and staff was evident every day, and his final act speaks volumes about his character.”

Principal Jeff Wardle spoke of Rivas’ profound impact on the school community, stating, “Mr. Rivas quickly became a trusted and familiar presence at our school, known for making students, families, and visitors feel welcomed, valued, and safe. His life was defined by service to others and a continued commitment to supporting and guiding young people. Life without him will be less bright.”
