In a poignant tale of survival, 20-year-old Kevin Liu has overcome the life-threatening challenges posed by acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. Liu’s ordeal began in August 2022, when he received a diagnosis that would change the trajectory of his young life. The cancer, which originated in the bone marrow, led to a grueling nine months of intense chemotherapy.

However, the battle was far from over. In the summer of 2024, just two years after achieving remission, Liu learned that the leukaemia had escalated, spreading ominously to his brain. This turn of events plunged him into a near-fatal septic shock, resulting in kidney and liver failure. Liu found himself in a coma for nearly a week, a critical period during which doctors expressed grave concerns about his chances of survival.

“Doctors told my family I had a very low chance of survival,” Liu recounted. After his harrowing ICU stay, where he faced life-threatening challenges, Liu was determined to push through once again. He underwent further treatments, but conventional chemotherapy no longer proved effective against the recurrence of cancer in his brain. Consequently, he transitioned to CAR T-cell therapy, a novel form of immunotherapy that harnesses the power of the patient’s own immune cells.
Today, Liu is in remission following a bone marrow transplant he received last year. This procedure left him temporarily unable to speak for five days due to a critical drop in his white blood cell count. Yet, amidst these medical challenges, Liu found solace in an unexpected aspect of his journey: the act of documenting his physical transformation through selfies. Initially intended as a record of his treatment’s physical toll, this practice evolved into a deeper reflection of his entire experience.
His initial selfies were a simple means to track changes in his appearance. However, as time passed, Liu realised that these images narrated a more profound story of resilience and self-discovery. “When I looked back at those photos, I was not just seeing my appearance. I was seeing my entire journey,” he explained.
The effects of cancer were not merely physical; they fundamentally shifted Liu’s self-image. Steroid treatments altered his body, and he often struggled to recognise his reflection. He candidly shared how the difficulty of maintaining a positive body image contributed to moments of isolation and depression. “It really affected my confidence and pushed me into a dark place mentally,” he acknowledged.
Throughout his treatment, Liu experienced significant changes in his hair as he faced both loss and regrowth. With resolve, he chose to take control of his appearance, opting to shave his head at one point. This decision, he expressed, brought relief and helped bolster his mental health during tumultuous times.
Liu’s journey has resonated with many, as he decided to share his experiences on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, where he has garnered nearly 150,000 followers combined. In an emotional video, he shared his varied appearances during different treatment stages, providing a narrative that he felt words alone could not encapsulate. “Every time I recovered, I slowly started to recognise myself again, and that feeling was incredible,” he reflected, crediting each recovery with making him both physically and mentally stronger.
Sharing his vulnerabilities online has been therapeutic for Liu, allowing him to process his emotions and confront daunting moments. He aims to offer hope to others in similar situations, with a mission to inspire and support those facing their own battles with illness. “If my videos can help even one person feel less alone or give them hope, that means everything to me,” he articulated.
Liu’s experiences over these past four years have taught him invaluable lessons about gratitude and the appreciation of life’s seemingly small pleasures. “Things we take for granted, like walking, speaking, eating, and just feeling normal, can be taken away so quickly,” he stated. In a world where health can change in an instant, Liu’s perspective is a compelling reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the importance of cherishing every moment.
As Liu continues to share his story, he stands as a symbol of hope and resilience, reminding us all to find strength in adversity and to appreciate the miracle of being alive.
