A dramatic rescue unfolded in Alaska recently, highlighting the swift action of a bystander and the responsiveness of local authorities. A teenage boy from Kodiak found himself in peril after falling through the ice of Island Lake, prompting a quick response that ultimately saved his life.

On Sunday, April 19, at approximately 1:20 PM local time, reports began to filter into the Alaska Department of Public Safety regarding the incident. The teenager had fallen into the icy waters of Island Lake, which is situated just north of Nikiski, Alaska. In a heartfelt video captured by responding officers, the young man expressed his gratitude, saying, “I don’t know what I would’ve done without you guys.”
The incident began when a woman witnessed the fall from her home. Cassie Keplinger, who was on her back patio at the time, saw two teenagers access the public area of the lake. She described watching as one of the boys ran towards an island in the lake and then abruptly turned back, only to fall through the ice. Realising the gravity of the situation, Keplinger’s husband, Zach, sprang into action. Having lived in the area for his entire life, he quickly grabbed a surfboard and sped towards the location while contacting law enforcement.
Upon receiving the distress call, State Trooper Anthony Will was dispatched to the scene. As he reached the icy shoreline, Will attempted to keep the frightened teenager calm, reassuring him while assessing the situation. “I started kind of walking out on the shore a little bit, just talking to the kid, trying to keep him calm because he started getting a little panicked,” Will recounted to local NBC affiliate KTUU.
Trooper Will’s brave actions were recorded on video, showing him carefully navigating the ice-covered lake. He eventually reached the stranded teen, who was becoming increasingly anxious. In an attempt to aid the boy, Trooper Will hurled the surfboard, provided by Zach Keplinger, towards him. As Will neared the teenager, he witnessed the boy trying to stand up, but he fell through the ice once more.
“It’s okay, I got you,” was Will’s comforting reassurance as he helped the teenager onto the surfboard. Meanwhile, Sergeant Nathan Walsh, who was also on the scene, passed a tow strap to Will. After skilfully attaching the strap to the surfboard, Will was able to pull the teenager safely back to shore.
Once on solid ground, the teen was quickly enveloped in blankets and taken to a local hospital. Medical professionals treated him for symptoms related to hypothermia, a condition that can be life-threatening if not addressed promptly. Fortunately, the rapid response of both the bystander and the troopers meant that he received the necessary care in good time.
In the aftermath of the rescue, officials from the Alaska Department of Public Safety and the Bayside Volunteer Fire Department did not respond immediately to requests for further comments. However, the incident has drawn attention to the importance of acting quickly in emergency situations and the impact a single individual’s actions can have in potentially saving a life.
