A remarkable birth took place aboard a Delta Air Lines flight last week, as a mid-air delivery became the focus of admiration and heartwarming accounts from those involved. Tina Fritz, one of the Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) who assisted in the delivery, shared her experiences and photos of baby Brielle Renee, who was born when her mother, Ashley Blair, unexpectedly went into labour during the flight from Atlanta to Portland, Oregon.

The incident unfolded on April 24, when Blair, who was two weeks ahead of her due date, began experiencing contractions. As the situation escalated, it became evident that prompt assistance would be necessary. Tina Fritz, who was travelling with her fellow EMT Kaarin Powell, had a previously relaxed holiday in the Dominican Republic disrupted by the urgent nature of the situation.

Fritz recounted how she and Powell were initially attending to another passenger when they were asked by flight attendants to assist with Blair. The pair’s qualifications were fortunate, but the circumstances were unique, as neither had encountered a mid-flight delivery before. Many passengers were left unaware that no doctors or nurses were present during the delivery, turning the two EMT friends into makeshift medical professionals at 30,000 feet.

Fritz noted that the cramped conditions of the aircraft presented significant challenges throughout the process. “The small space was definitely the most difficult part,” she explained. Despite the absence of medical supplies usually available for such emergencies, the EMTs made do. They requested blankets and an obstetrical kit, neither of which was available, and instead improvised by borrowing blankets from nearby passengers.

In a striking display of resourcefulness, they used a flight attendant’s shoelace to tie off the umbilical cord and one of Powell’s shoelaces to establish an IV for the labouring mother. As Blair loudly declared “Okay, it’s time. I got to push,” the flight attendants informed the EMTs that they needed to sit down as the plane was preparing for landing. Fritz and Powell, absorbed in the moment, protested, fearing they would not finish in time.

After a swift and impressive delivery, baby Brielle Reneé arrived at 10 p.m. local time, weighing in at 5 lbs. 8 oz. The sheer determination displayed by Blair during the ordeal did not go unnoticed. “Within three really good pushes, the baby was out and doing perfectly. Mum was a rock star,” Fritz told reporters, emphasising how commendably Blair handled the situation. Following the delivery, Fritz cut the cord before wrapping the newborn in a blanket and returning her to her mother, prompting cheers from passengers as they taxied in.

Upon landing, a team from the Port of Portland was ready to assist. A communications spokesperson confirmed that Blair and her newborn daughter were both in good health and subsequently transferred to a hospital for observation. The outpouring of support for Blair and her baby from fellow passengers demonstrated the camaraderie that can emerge from such extraordinary circumstances.

Fritz noted that she and Blair have maintained contact since the birth.
