Adam Scott Says a Radio Ad Led to a Spontaneous Road Trip and His Cameo in a 1992 R.E.M. Music Video as a Teenager

Actor Adam Scott has recently reflected on one of his initial experiences with fame, recalling a memorable stint as an extra in the music video for R.E.M.’s song “Drive.” This nostalgic revelation offers insight into Scott’s early foray into the entertainment industry, prior to becoming well-known for his roles in popular television series like *Parks and Recreation* and *Severance*.

Scott, now 52, shared his story during a guest appearance on the *Big Bro With Kid Cudi* podcast. The experience dates back to 1992 when he was a teenager in Northern California. He recalls hearing a radio advertisement that called for extras to appear in a music video for R.E.M., one of the most successful bands of that era. This spontaneous opportunity piqued the interest of Scott and his friends, leading them to embark on a road trip to Los Angeles.

In recounting this adventure, he said, “Me and my friend — I’m from Santa Cruz, which is up in Northern California, and I was on a break from school. I heard something on the radio about calling a number to be an extra in this music video.” The excitement of the chance encounter propelled them to drive down the coast to Los Angeles, where they eventually found themselves on set with the iconic band as they filmed the music video.

The video features lead singer Michael Stipe engaging in the iconic act of crowd-surfing, as the backdrop for the band’s hauntingly beautiful song. Scott explained that during the shoot, he and his companions were just among the throngs of background extras, standing witness to a band that was then at the pinnacle of their career. “It was so fun,” Scott said, recalling how they spent two or three nights on set, completely enamoured by the entire experience.

Scott described the awe of seeing one of his favourite bands perform live during the filming process. He remarked on the surreal nature of being in the presence of artists he hugely admired, stating, “We were all like, background extras in the video… they were the biggest band in the world, and we’re just there looking at these guys making their music video.”

That brief encounter in the music industry was more than just a fun experience; it provided Scott with an early glimpse into the world of entertainment, which would eventually become his career. He noted, “So it was kind of my first experience with that, but also really fun,” highlighting the formative impact of this encounter.

Over the years, however, Scott struggled to identify himself in the final cut of the video. Despite being part of the crowd scene, he admitted that he often found himself lost among the sea of faces. “I could never find myself in the crowd of people,” he remarked. It wasn’t until several years later that a keen-eyed fan managed to spot him in the footage, finally allowing him to see the moment he had long sought.
