Actor Sam Neill has openly shared his journey through cancer in his latest memoir, “Did I Ever Tell You This?”. The star of the iconic “Jurassic Park” franchise, who was diagnosed with a rare form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, credits innovative CAR T-cell therapy for bringing his condition into remission and enabling him to embrace life anew.
Neill, who turned 78, first noticed abnormalities in his health while promoting “Jurassic World Dominion” in March 2022. He quickly found himself confronted with health challenges that drastically changed his day-to-day existence. In an interview with Australia’s 7 News, Neill described the symptoms he had experienced, stating, “I’ve been living with a particular type of lymphoma for about five years and I was on chemotherapy, and the pretty miserable business but it was keeping me alive.”
The actor explained that after a period of treatment, his chemotherapy began losing efficacy, leaving him without a clear path forward. “I was at a loss, and it looked like I was on the way out, which wasn’t ideal obviously,” Neill recounted. Faced with this uncertainty, he was directed towards CAR T-cell therapy, a pioneering immunotherapy that involves reengineering a patient’s T cells to target and destroy cancer cells.
By September 2023, Neill announced that he had been using CAR T-cell therapy—undergoing infusions every fortnight indefinitely—and celebrated that he had entered remission for over a year. “I’ve just had a scan just now, and there is no cancer in my body, that’s an extraordinary thing,” he shared with 7 News.
His health challenges began to take form as he found noticeable lumps on his neck while engaged in publicity for “Jurassic World Dominion.” This led him to a blood test, which confirmed the diagnosis. Reflecting on the whirlwind of events that followed, Neill described, “Within a few days I was lying on a hospital bed having all kinds of chemicals draining into my system, killing everything aboard,” he wrote in his memoir. “For therapeutic reasons. To be cured of a thing I didn’t know I had just a few days ago. Yep, suddenly things are different — this is some serious s—.”
The seriousness of his diagnosis prompted Neill to contemplate his own mortality and express gratitude for the life he has lived. “I started to think I better write some of this down because I’m not sure how long I have to live,” Neill conveyed, revealing the motivation behind his memoir. “I was running against the clock.”
As he received good news from continual scans, his perspective shifted. Month by month, as the cancer remained absent, hope surged within him. “Now I’m a living man, with every intent of going on living and living and living,” he wrote, encapsulating the resilience he has adopted in the face of adversity.
