Nine teenagers were apprehended on Saturday in a significant police operation following a pre-organised “takeover” event at Icon Park in Orlando, Florida. The chaos unfolded around 7:30 PM, with an estimated crowd exceeding 1,000 teenagers congregating at the popular entertainment venue, according to a statement from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO). The sheer volume of attendees necessitated an extensive police presence, with 54 deputies deployed to manage the situation.
Problems escalated as fights broke out, prompting deputies to intervene in order to restore order. A spokesperson for the OCSO expressed that the officers’ duties included both breaking up altercations and helping to dispel the crowd in what became a volatile scene. During the course of their efforts, two deputies sustained injuries and were subsequently taken to a local hospital. Thankfully, they were treated and released, with their conditions reported to be stable.
Following the clashes, a total of nine individuals were arrested, facing charges that included battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting an officer with violence, resisting an officer without violence, affray, and trespassing after warning. Tavorian’s grandmother, Tamika Martel, has voiced concerns over the police response, claiming that the deputy’s actions were excessive. “Once he tackled him, I feel like he could have just cuffed him from there instead of slamming him,” she argued, expressing her belief that children deserve to be treated with understanding and restraint by law enforcement.
The Dade family has informed the authorities of their intention to file a complaint with the sheriff’s office concerning the arrest and the subsequent actions of the deputy involved.
