Following their rise to prominence, Joe and Katherine Jackson made the move from their modest two-bedroom home in Gary, Indiana, to Los Angeles. Jaafar Jackson, Michael’s nephew, portrays him in the film and shared insights about filming at Hayvenhurst. In an interview with Miles Teller for Interview Magazine, Jaafar described the emotional atmosphere of working on set, recalling the many memories associated with the home.

The Hayvenhurst estate is situated in Encino, a wealthy neighbourhood in Los Angeles. After purchasing the property in 1971, Joe Jackson and his family featured on the cover of Life magazine later that year, illustrating their newfound success. Renowned photographer John Olson, who captured the iconic images, noted the well-mannered nature of the family during the shoot, although he remarked on Joe’s stern demeanor.

As Michael’s career developed, he ultimately bought the estate from his father in the early 1980s. He undertook an extensive renovation of the property, introducing a variety of luxury features, including a Japanese koi pond, a cinema, and an enchanting faux candy store, among others. These personal touches reflected his unique style and penchant for creativity.

Michael Jackson resided at Hayvenhurst for 17 years, a period in which he achieved remarkable milestones in his career. During this time, he produced celebrated albums such as “Off the Wall” and “Thriller,” while also making a mark in the media by gracing the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. The estate was a veritable menagerie, housing an array of exotic pets including peacocks, tigers, and even a giraffe at one point. Although he managed to secure a separate three-bedroom condominium in the early 1980s, Michael preferred the comfort of Hayvenhurst, largely due to his close-knit relationship with his mother.

In 1988, Michael transitioned from Hayvenhurst to Neverland Ranch, a decision that marked a new chapter in his life. Despite his departure, the Jackson family continued to use the estate as a gathering space. Following his passing in 2009, Michael’s children—Prince, Paris, and Bigi—spent significant time at Hayvenhurst, recalling it fondly as a setting for childhood memories.

The estate has been described as a lively “hotel for kids” where family members often congregated, and childhood activities flourished. A family friend commented on the playful atmosphere of the home, where siblings and cousins enjoyed carefree moments together in various parts of the grounds.

Now, as the Jackson family retains ownership of Hayvenhurst, its function has shifted. While the estate holds immense historical and sentimental value, it no longer serves as a primary residence for the Jacksons. The home has evolved into a symbol of a remarkable musical legacy, as well as a space for artistic reflection, especially as the crew for the upcoming biopic utilised it for filming.
