House Republican Who Hasn’t Voted in Nearly 2 Months Breaks Silence on His Mysterious Absence

New Jersey Congressman Tom Kean Jr. has receded from public life for almost two months, citing a personal health issue. The Republican representative, who is currently engaged in a tight race for re-election, has not participated in any congressional votes since early March.

In a statement released through his campaign on April 28, the 57-year-old Kean acknowledged his absence for the first time, attributing it to a “personal medical issue.” He has not provided further details regarding his condition or the nature of his health concerns. In his communication, Kean expressed gratitude towards his constituents and colleagues for their understanding as he concentrates on his recovery. He conveyed optimism, stating his doctors have assured him that he is on the path to a full recovery and plans to return to his duties soon.

Kean’s last vote in Congress was recorded on March 5. His absence comes at a time of notable turnover within the House, which has seen multiple resignations and the death of one member in April alone. Presently, there are five vacancies in the highly contested House of Representatives, where Republicans hold 217 seats, including the independent representative from California, Kevin Kiley. The Democrats follow closely behind with 212 members.

The timing of Kean’s absence is particularly critical, as the House is poised to vote on several key initiatives from President Donald Trump. Kean, the son of former New Jersey Governor Thomas Kean, was elected to Congress in 2022 and is now facing a competitive re-election campaign in the forthcoming November midterms.

House Speaker Mike Johnson recently announced that he had spoken with Kean on April 24, during which Kean indicated that he anticipated a swift return to his responsibilities. However, specifics regarding his health and expected date of return remain unclear. Attempts by The New York Times to reach Kean at his New Jersey home on April 27 were unsuccessful, with no response from anyone at the property.

Local residents in Westfield, the Congressman’s neighbourhood, either opted not to comment on his absence or indicated that they had not noticed his lack of presence. In addition, the Westfield Police Department reported that there had been no emergency calls made to Kean’s residence since early March, suggesting that there has been no immediate cause for concern.

Bill Palatucci, a member of the Republican National Committee from New Jersey who has served as Kean’s campaign attorney, reiterated the family’s stance, which emphasises the personal nature of the issue and reassures that he is recovering.

This period has seen significant upheaval in the House, with members such as Eric Swalwell resigning amidst multiple sexual misconduct allegations, which he has denied. Texas Republican Tony Gonzales also departed following claims of an affair, while Democrat Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick resigned before facing an ethics panel in connection with federal criminal charges related to an alleged scheme to misappropriate federal funds.

The unexpected exits of these members, coupled with the deaths of veteran legislators David Scott of Georgia and Doug LaMalfa of California, has further complicated the current landscape of the House. As the political arena continues to shift, Kean’s situation remains a focal point as the election approaches, with many waiting to see how his health will affect his campaign and constituency’s interests.
