In the wake of personal tragedy, Charles Johnson has become a leading voice in the fight against maternal mortality, dedicating his life to advocating for the welfare of mothers and their children. The catalyst for his activism was the untimely death of his wife, Kira, who passed away shortly after the birth of their second son, Langston, in April 2016. At the time of her passing, Kira, 39, was a dedicated mother and a health-conscious individual, shattering the myth that maternal deaths are merely a result of underlying health issues.

Johnson, a self-described “humble soccer dad,” never anticipated taking on the role of an activist. Yet, the shocking circumstances surrounding Kira’s death propelled him into a cause he had not initially contemplated. “There are only two types of people in this country: either you are a mother or you have one,” he stated, highlighting the universal concern surrounding maternal health.

Kira’s ordeal began at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center when he noticed alarming signs of distress. Her condition deteriorated quickly due to excessive bleeding, but, according to Johnson, the medical staff failed to act promptly. Despite his desperate pleas for help, Kira was not regarded as a priority, leading to a tragic outcome after multiple surgeries. Johnson recalled her exceptional health prior to the incident, making the loss even more incomprehensible.
As a suddenly single father, Johnson confronted the reality of raising his two sons alone while coping with profound grief. This experience not only transformed his life but also galvanised him into action. He learned that maternal mortality rates in the United States are alarmingly high and often linked to systemic issues such as racial bias and inadequate medical care. The CDC reported a stark disparity, noting that Black women are significantly more likely to die in childbirth than their white counterparts.
In 2017, Johnson founded the nonprofit organisation 4Kira4Moms, which has evolved into a critical resource for families affected by maternal death. Nearly a decade later, the group offers a rapid response service within 24 hours of a maternal death or life-threatening situation, providing essential supplies like diapers and formula, along with various forms of support, including legal assistance and grief counselling. Since its inception, 4Kira4Moms has aided over 300 families.
Johnson’s advocacy extends beyond grassroots initiatives. He has testified before Congress in support of legislative efforts aimed at reducing maternal mortality, such as the Preventing Maternal Deaths Act, which passed in 2018, and the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act of 2021. His tireless work has contributed to securing nearly $200 million in federal funding for state-level initiatives addressing maternal care.
Despite the progress made—recent statistics showing a decline in maternal deaths from 1,205 in 2021 to 649 in 2024—Johnson acknowledges the emotional toll of these statistics. “These mothers are so much more than statistics,” he emphasises. He remains particularly focused on ensuring that Kira’s legacy contributes to systemic changes in maternal healthcare.
Recently, Johnson has collaborated with lawmakers to advance the WELLS Act, which aims to prevent women in active labour from being turned away from hospitals. This vital legislation addresses the need for better hospital protocols and inclusivity in healthcare training.
Today, Johnson resides in Vinings, Georgia, with his sons, who are approaching their teenage years. He works tirelessly to balance advocacy with being an engaged father. Although his children do not fully grasp the depth of his work, they are surrounded by reminders of their mother, as her presence is woven into their daily lives through stories and memories shared by their father.
Reflecting on his parenting journey, Johnson notes how his sons demonstrate resilience and empathy, traits he attributes to their understanding of loss at such a young age. He cherishes moments spent coaching their soccer teams, finding joy in the simplicity of childhood amidst his complex life of advocacy.
While he continues to grieve for Kira, Johnson’s commitment to maternal health is unwavering. He embodies the hope that one day, there will be no need for organisations like 4Kira4Moms. “I will do this as long as there’s breath in my body, but I hope to eliminate the need,” he expresses, underscoring his profound dedication to ensuring that every mother goes home with her child.
Johnson’s journey, shaped by personal loss, has transformed him into a powerful advocate for change, demonstrating that even in the face of tragedy, one can foster hope and strive for a better future for all mothers.
