Disney has launched a special initiative called “Week of Wishes,” inspired by the heartwarming story of a young boy named Efrain “EJ” Maldonado. This campaign underscores the company’s long-standing partnership with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which has fulfilled wishes for over 175,000 children since it began in 1981.

EJ, a 16-year-old from Illinois, first reached out to Disney five years ago with aspirations of becoming an animator. At the time, he was battling biliary atresia, a serious medical condition that led him to require a liver transplant. While undergoing treatment in hospital, he found solace in Disney classics such as Aladdin and Fantasia. His journey began with a heartfelt letter to Walt Disney Animation, asking for guidance on improving his drawing skills and delving into computer animation.

In his letter, the then-11-year-old EJ showcased some of his artwork and expressed his dreams of contributing to the iconic studio. Little did he know, his wish would eventually come true. EJ was given the opportunity to spend a “day in the life” with animators at Disney, which proved to be a transformative experience for him.

To commemorate his inspiring journey, Disney has created a new video that pays tribute to EJ. Directed by Emmy-nominated filmmaker Goh Iromoto, the clip showcases four of EJ’s drawings and highlights the company’s collaboration with Make-A-Wish. Not only does this video tell EJ’s story, but it also serves as a reminder of the joy and inspiration Disney strives to provide to millions around the globe.
The “Week of Wishes” commenced on Monday, April 27, and will continue until Friday, May 1. The initiative aims to celebrate the impact of the partnership between Disney and Make-A-Wish, inviting families to experience magical events. Among the activities planned is an Avengers-themed celebration at Disneyland, where approximately 40 children and their families will meet actors Paul Bettany and Anthony Mackie, who portray notable characters within the Marvel franchise.
In addition to the Disneyland festivities, two children will have a unique opportunity to announce picks during the NFL draft on ESPN, another capstone event of this special week. This initiative not only celebrates the wish-making process but also spotlights the diverse experiences that Disney facilitates through its collaboration with Make-A-Wish.
Josh D’Amaro, Disney’s CEO, expressed gratitude for the connection that wish children have with the company. In his statement, he said, “We’re honoured that so many wish kids choose Disney. Our stories bring joy, hope and inspiration to millions around the world, and that’s a privilege we take very seriously.” He also emphasised how this partnership resonates with the values and legacy of Walt Disney himself.
Leslie Motter, President of Make-A-Wish America, echoed D’Amaro’s sentiments, noting the enduring strength of this 45-year relationship. She expressed that the “Disney Week of Wishes” serves as a powerful reminder of the substantial impact Disney has made in the lives of children facing considerable challenges.
As the “Week of Wishes” unfolds, it promises to be a moment of joy and inspiration, not only for the children participating but for all those who cherish the values of hope and resilience that Disney embodies. With events designed to bring smiles and create lasting memories, this week is a celebration of the extraordinary impact of make-believe in the real world.
