A remarkable story is emerging from Utah involving an 18-year-old high school student, Gretl Talbot, who successfully identified the onset of her own stroke, thanks to the skills she acquired through a recent nursing assistant course. This swift self-diagnosis not only facilitated prompt medical attention that potentially saved her life, but it also highlighted significant issues regarding congenital heart defects that had been overlooked by medical professionals.

On 21 February, while preparing for an ice skating outing, Gretl experienced a sudden numbness in her right hand. Initially, she attempted to dismiss the unusual sensation as a mere joke to herself. “In my head, I was joking like, ‘Man, I must be having a stroke.’ And then I was like, ‘Wait, I actually can’t move my hand,’” she recounted. The severity of her condition quickly became apparent as she recognised the critical signs of a stroke.

Having recently completed her training, Gretl recalled the important acronym FAST, which stands for “facial drooping,” “arm weakness,” “speech difficulty,” and “time to call 999.” She applied this knowledge immediately when she noticed her own facial drooping. “I look at my face, and it’s drooping, and I’m like, ‘Yep, I’m having a stroke,’” she said. Gretl then unlocked the door to call for her sister, but her ability to speak was heavily impacted, requiring multiple attempts before she could alert her family to the emergency.
According to reports, help arrived rapidly, with an ambulance arriving within a minute of her sister’s call. Once at the hospital, medical professionals administered medication to dissolve blood clots, a response that began to alleviate her symptoms almost instantly. Further examinations during her intensive care stay revealed a congenital heart defect, specifically a hole in her heart, which was likely the cause of her stroke.
Gretl had previously felt that there was an issue with her heart, expressing concerns to various doctors in the months leading up to her stroke. Unfortunately, each time, her worries were dismissed, with some physicians attributing her health concerns to anxiety. This experience has heightened her aim to raise awareness about the critical need for early detection of stroke symptoms and associated heart issues.
“I want this to help bring about brain awareness and let others know about the BEFAST acronym,” she stated, explaining that the BE in BEFAST represents “balance loss” and “eye sight changes.” Emphasising the significance of her experience, she hopes that others will recognise the signs of a stroke and act swiftly to seek medical assistance. This could lead not just to improved outcomes but potentially save lives.
With aspirations of pursuing nursing or physical therapy in college, Gretl’s story has not only inspired her peers but has also moved her family. Her sister, Thobeka Talbot, has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the burgeoning medical expenses associated with Gretl’s treatment. “For months, she has felt that there was something wrong with her heart,” Thobeka shared on the fundraising page, stressing that Gretl’s intuition may have indeed prevented further, more severe consequences.
