A young girl made headlines after discovering a rare axolotl while exploring the banks of the River Ogmore in Bridgend, Wales. Ten-year-old Evie, accompanied by her mother, Melanie Hill, found the endangered amphibian hiding under a discarded mat near the “Dipping Bridge.” The incident has drawn significant attention as it marks the first confirmed wild sighting of an axolotl in the United Kingdom.

Evie’s unexpected discovery came as a surprise, particularly as her mother had previously told her that axolotls were not real. “I went down to the bank and there was this axolotl there,” Evie recounted, expressing her excitement at finding the creature. “I caught it and brought it back.” Following the find, the family named the axolotl “Dippy.”

Chris Newman, the director of the National Center for Reptile Welfare (NCRW), explained that releasing a non-native species like the axolotl into the wild is not only illegal but detrimental to the animals’ well-being. He commended Evie’s keen observation skills, noting, “That itself is no mean feat. They’re quite slippery, so I think she did really well.” He added that Evie’s find could have potentially saved Dippy’s life, considering the circumstances that likely led to its abandonment.
As the story of Dippy spreads, Melanie revealed that she has often told Evie that the creatures she watched on YouTube were fictional. “Here I am with one in my kitchen,” she expressed, still in disbelief at the situation. In the meantime, Evie has been sharing her remarkable find with classmates at school, where Dippy has captured the fascination of her peers. “Everybody at school is fascinated about the story of Dippy,” she enthused.
