A recent incident involving a Tarom Airlines flight has raised concerns regarding pilot health and safety protocols in aviation. On August 4, 2021, during a flight from Amsterdam to Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport, the co-pilot, aged 57, fainted mid-flight, forcing the pilot to declare an emergency.

Reports reveal that prior to the flight, the co-pilot had struggled to get a restful night’s sleep, citing distractions from noise and the use of mosquito repellent where he had been resting. Despite feeling unwell, he initially assured the pilot-in-command that he could perform his duties during the flight. This reassessment took place at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport just before departure.


The aircraft took off at approximately 6:00 a.m. local time, with around 50 minutes of flying time logged when the co-pilot reported discomfort.
