A California man has been charged with murder following the tragic death of Arti Varma, a 59-year-old school teacher, and the serious injury of her daughter, Meera, aged 25. The incident occurred on April 20 in their Burbank home. Authorities have charged 30-year-old Sergio Meza Fraire with one count of murder, one count of attempted murder, and one count of first-degree residential burglary, all with a special circumstance of lying in wait.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office made the announcement regarding the charges on April 23. During a court appearance, Fraire pleaded not guilty to the allegations levelled against him. He is currently being held without bail, although there has been no information released regarding whether he has secured legal representation.
The police were called to the residence on North Brighton Street at approximately 6 a.m. on the morning of the incident. Upon arrival, they found both Arti and Meera Varma suffering from stab wounds. Reports indicate that Fraire allegedly entered the home while the victims were asleep, using a knife to inflict the fatal injuries.
Tragically, Arti Varma succumbed to her wounds shortly after being transported to a local hospital, while her daughter continues to receive medical treatment for her injuries. Arti Varma was a dedicated first-grade teacher at Bret Harte Elementary School in Burbank, where she was highly regarded by both students and colleagues. Friends described her as a passionate educator who was deeply committed to her students.
Cristina Strattan, a friend of Arti, shared her sorrow with the media, highlighting Varma’s vibrant spirit and passion for teaching. “She was such a bright light,” Strattan remarked, emphasising how proud Arti was of her students and her joy in being an educator.
Meera Varma, alongside her mother, has been known for her advocacy work in mental health and public speaking. She has had the opportunity to work with prominent figures, including Oprah Winfrey and several key political figures. The impact of this horrific violence has resonated deeply within the community, resulting in an outpouring of grief for the Varma family.
District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman offered his condolences, stating, “Arti Varma was a deeply beloved elementary school teacher who was senselessly taken from her family and community in an act of horrific violence.” Hochman also expressed his sympathy for the entire Burbank community, reaffirming that resources are available to support the surviving victim in this time of tragedy.
Currently, authorities are still investigating the incident, and the motive behind the attack remains unclear. There is no indication that Fraire had any prior connection to Arti or Meera Varma before the violent event.
