In a poignant tale of love and resilience, Alana Matthews’ remarkable story has captured the hearts of many after she planned her wedding in a mere five days following a devastating cancer diagnosis. Alana, who was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) in early 2024, sadly passed away just weeks after the event, but not before creating beautiful memories with her loved ones.

Alana’s journey began in late 2023 when she experienced symptoms that were initially mistaken for a seasonal illness. According to her best friend, Katie Powell, Alana’s situation escalated when she struggled to recover from what was thought to be a bad flu. “She went to the doctor twice and was told it was nothing to worry about,” Katie recounted. However, as Alana’s condition worsened, her partner Charlie called for emergency assistance when she had difficulty breathing. This alarming incident led to a hospital admission that would last six months, culminating in a diagnosis of aggressive blood cancer.
Despite enduring a taxing regime of chemotherapy, Alana achieved temporary remission and enjoyed a brief period of normalcy, graduating from university with top honours. “We had about four weeks that summer where things felt almost normal again,” Katie reflected. However, her cancer returned shortly thereafter, leading to further treatment, including participation in a clinical trial.

As Alana’s health fluctuated, her spirits remained remarkably high. Friends and family rallied around her, upholding a sense of hope and positivity. “It was always about when this is all over,” Katie recalled, emphasising Alana’s optimistic outlook during this difficult time. Unfortunately, a subsequent cancer relapse in July 2025 heralded the bleak news that no more treatment options were available.
Confronted with this devastating prognosis, Alana made a courageous decision to marry Charlie, whom Katie described as “the light of her life.” Under pressing circumstances, the couple orchestrated their wedding in just five days. Katie recounted this poignant event, stating, “It was emotional, of course, but it was also just a really beautiful day. Alana was exhausted, but she powered through.” For Alana, even in such difficult circumstances, the wedding embodied what she believed to be her perfect day, as friends and family came together to ensure that it would be memorable.

Following her wedding, Alana’s health tragically declined rapidly, and by October, she passed away surrounded by those who loved her, leaving behind a legacy of strength and inspiration. She was only 27 years old at the time of her death, and her untimely passing has motivated Katie to honour her memory through various fundraising initiatives.
Determined to make a difference, Katie has raised thousands of pounds for Blood Cancer UK through an ambitious 85-mile walk from London to Brighton and has completed a half-marathon. She explained her motivation by stating, “I needed to do something that pushed me mentally and physically… Alana went through so much — I felt like I could push myself too.”
In sharing Alana’s harrowing yet uplifting story, Katie hopes to encourage others to be vigilant about their health. She urges individuals to trust their instincts when something feels amiss, taking heed of Alana’s experience of being dismissed by medical professionals in the early stages of her illness. “If something feels wrong, don’t ignore it,” she stresses, warning that early detection could potentially alter outcomes.
Katie’s ultimate vision is for Alana’s story to support others facing similar challenges. She believes that by raising awareness about the importance of recognising symptoms early, she can help individuals feel less isolated in their journeys. “If Alana’s story can help even one person — whether that’s recognising symptoms earlier, pushing for answers, or just feeling less alone — then that’s something she would have wanted,” Katie concluded.
The legacy of Alana Matthews lives on not only through her inspiring relationship and courageous spirit but also in the driving force of her best friend, who strives to bring hope to others touched by blood cancer.
