Smokey Robinson’s Defamation Claims Dismissed in Sexual Assault Lawsuit

Smokey Robinson, the legendary Motown singer, has recently seen his defamation claims against multiple accusers dismissed by a California judge. Judge Kevin C. Brazile ruled on April 23 that there was insufficient evidence to establish that the accusers, who are suing Robinson for sexual assault, acted with “actual malice” when they labelled him a “serial and sick rapist” during a press conference last year.

The court’s decision highlights a significant legal battle between Robinson, aged 86, and four women who have accused him of severe sexual misconduct. The judge acknowledged inconsistencies in the women’s accounts but stated that the evidence did not meet the high threshold of proving actual malice necessary under California’s Anti-SLAPP law, which is designed to protect individuals from frivolous lawsuits intended to chill free speech.

Robinson and his wife Frances had sought defamation damages after the women publicly accused him of misconduct that allegedly occurred during their employment.
