In a remarkable story of perseverance, Raelene Page graduated from college at the age of 74, more than five decades after initially putting her education on hold. Raelene’s journey back to academia was marked by life choices, personal challenges, and ultimately, a desire to fulfil a long-held dream.

In 1969, Raelene was presented with the opportunity to attend Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. However, in a pivotal moment, she decided to stay in her hometown in northern Maine to begin a family instead. “My dreams of going to college were put on hold,” she reflected in a recent interview. She dedicated her life to marriage, motherhood, and various careers that included running a daycare, managing a restaurant, working as a bookkeeper for a logging company, and spending over two decades as a postmaster with the U.S. Postal Service.

Despite her diverse and fulfilling career, Raelene often found that the prospect of returning to school became increasingly distant. “Raising my family and working consumed my time, and I lost hope of ever being able to attend college,” she admitted. Nonetheless, the aspiration for further learning remained nestled in her heart. “I have always wished that I had attended college,” she said, expressing a lifelong passion for education.

Her motivation to pursue her studies resurfaced years later when she relocated to California and discovered the online BYU Pathway program. Initially, she dismissed the idea due to its in-person requirements. However, when she learned in 2021 that the programme could be completed virtually, she seized the opportunity and enrolled in 2022. Raelene embarked on her academic journey with the support of her granddaughter, Taylor Page. “I had no idea what would be required of me, and that was a good thing,” she reflected on her initial enrolment.

Returning to an educational setting came with its fair share of challenges, especially in adapting to new technology. “The biggest challenge for me was that I was an old school learner with very few computer skills,” Raelene explained. Taylor noted the steep learning curve, recounting how Nana would often call with questions about saving documents or other basic computer tasks. “We would help when we could, but she did a lot of it on her own,” Taylor shared.

Despite the hurdles, Raelene remained determined to succeed. She grappled with moments of self-doubt and anxiety but found solace in her faith. “What kept me going was my faith in God and the power of prayer,” she stated, emphasising that spiritual guidance played a significant role in her journey.

The culmination of her efforts arrived as she walked across the stage during her graduation ceremony. Raelene described the moment as surreal and the result of decades of hard work. “I accomplished what I set out to do. WOW!!” she exclaimed. The joy was palpable as her family witnessed the milestone; Taylor expressed overwhelming pride and excitement, particularly when she and her brother surprised Raelene by attending her ceremony.

Their celebration extended well beyond the ceremony itself, featuring a family dinner and a shared sense of triumph. “Nana’s name was the second to be called at graduation, and we were so excited to cheer her on,” Taylor reflected. This emotional experience resonated deeply with everyone present, and the tears of joy were evident as they celebrated her achievement together.

In an age where social media can amplify personal stories, Taylor decided to share a video of her grandmother’s graduation on TikTok. The clip quickly gained traction, touching the hearts of many and inspiring a community.
