**Community Efforts Aid in Recovery of Toddler Following Tragic Incident**

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) in Washington D.C. has confirmed the safe recovery of 2-year-old Royce Hawkins, who went missing after the tragic shooting of his mother. The Amber Alert for the young boy was lifted early on Wednesday morning, following his discovery unharmed.
On April 21, the police responded to reports of a shooting on Kenyon Street in Northwest D.C., where they found 25-year-old Jamillah Gales. She was discovered in a rear alley, unconscious and unresponsive. Despite immediate medical attention from D.C. Fire and EMS, Gales was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following the shocking incident, officers learned that Royce had been with his mother shortly before the shooting and was missing afterwards. In response to the urgent situation, the MPD issued an Amber Alert, prompting the community to assist in the search for the toddler as concern for his safety grew.
By approximately 11 a.m. on April 22, law enforcement had located Hawkins in a nearby residence, promptly cancelling the Amber Alert. Interim Chief of the MPD, Jeffery Carroll, revealed that a concerted effort, including door-to-door canvassing by officers, contributed to the successful recovery of the boy. “We did receive some tips from the Amber Alerts, but we also had officers that were in the block here, based on some information, that were going door-to-door and canvassing,” he stated during a press conference.
Inside the residence where Royce was found, police also apprehended a suspect believed to be responsible for Gales’ murder. This individual has been charged with second-degree murder and is reportedly not the biological father of the child.
