Dave Grohl, the charismatic frontman of the Foo Fighters, has recently shared an amusing insight into his pre-show vocal practices during an episode of the Dish podcast aired on April 22. Reflecting on a visit to an ear, nose, and throat specialist roughly eight years ago, Grohl recounted his anxious anticipation prior to having his vocal cords examined.

At 57 years of age, Grohl admitted he had never undergone such a procedure before, and he was understandably concerned about the state of his vocal cords. In a light-hearted moment, he joked, “Oh, Jesus. It’s going to look like string cheese.” Grohl expressed fear that he would learn the dreaded news that his singing career could be coming to an end due to vocal damage. However, his apprehensions were quickly alleviated.
When the doctor examined Grohl’s vocal cords using a camera, he was pleasantly surprised by the response. “He goes, ‘Wow, they look great,’” Grohl recounted incredulously. After a brief exchange about whether he undertakes vocal warm-ups or cool-downs, Grohl candidly admitted that he does neither, leading to his unconventional pre-show ritual being laid bare.

His routine, which he described humourously, involves popping open a beer about an hour before the performance. He further divulged that it often includes taking an Advil for his aches and pains, a reality he credits to the trials of age. Following the beer, Grohl will typically indulge in a shot of whiskey, after which the cycle continues with another beer or shot, all likened to a ritualistic “band prayer.”
To Grohl’s delight, the doctor seemed taken aback but impressed with his unconventional approach to preparing for performances, advising, “Just don’t change what you’re doing. It’s working!” This endorsement left Grohl feeling relieved and amused, seemingly solidifying the effectiveness of his routine.

The conversation not only provided a glimpse into his pre-show activities but also into his life as a father. Upon returning home from touring, Grohl relishes the opportunity to cook for his family. With three daughters – Violet Maye, 20, Harper Willow, 17, and Ophelia Saint, 11 – whom he shares with his wife Jordyn Blum, he revels in the comfort of preparing meals. Grohl expressed that whether he is making a roast or a simple pasta dish, his aim is to bring comfort and a sense of normalcy to his children after his time away.
In a noteworthy revelation, Grohl mentioned that he recently welcomed his fourth child in September 2024, diversifying his experiences as a parent. Despite his busy life as a rock star, Grohl attributes great importance to family, reflecting on the joy he finds in his domestic life upon returning from the road.
Fans of the Foo Fighters can look forward to the release of their 12th studio album, titled “Your Favorite Toy,” scheduled to hit the shelves on April 24. This latest project promises to showcase the band’s continued evolution in the music industry and highlights Grohl’s ongoing contribution to rock music.
In an industry often filled with pressures and expectations, Grohl’s candid revelations about his unorthodox vocal preparation and heartfelt connection to his family highlight his down-to-earth personality. His ability to blend the rigours of rock stardom with normal family life resonates strongly with his audience, solidifying his status not only as a talented musician but also as a relatable figure. As Grohl himself might say, it may be as simple as finding the right balance between work, play, and family.
