A dramatic rescue operation unfolded on Mount Washington this past weekend, where two teenage hikers found themselves battling harsh conditions and severe exhaustion. Khang Nguyen, 17, and Vaughn Webb, 18, both from Plymouth, Massachusetts, were saved by the swift actions of rescue teams after a challenging climb that led them into distress on Saturday, April 18.

According to the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, the pair began their ascent with optimism but soon faced several obstacles, including poor weather conditions, injuries, and depleting supplies. Despite their preparations, they quickly ran out of food and water, which exacerbated their difficulties as they progressed further up the mountain.

Nguyen recounted a painful experience during the climb, stating that he sustained a leg injury which made even the simple act of lifting his leg extremely painful. Halfway to the summit, Nguyen made a pivotal decision to encourage Webb to continue without him. As he battled his discomfort, he urged his friend to reach the summit and seek assistance, demonstrating a sense of camaraderie and selflessness amidst their dire situation.

Visual evidence of his plight was captured in a video that showed Nguyen perched precariously on the mountainside, with strong winds swirling around him. He expressed his determination, stating, “I’m almost up there, and I promise Vaughn, I’ll make it.” However, the escalating conditions forced him to reconsider and reassess as he desperately dialled 911 for help.
The response from conservation officers was rapid. Employing their knowledge of the terrain, they communicated with a Mount Washington State Park employee who was able to locate Nguyen and Webb by 8 p.m. local time. Once found, they were guided back to the safety of a State Park building, where the park staff provided essential first aid, food, and water to the exhausted teens.
Nguyen later praised the efforts of the state park employee, recalling how helpful he was in their time of need. By 9 p.m., a conservation officer began the descent back down the mountain with Nguyen and Webb, ensuring that they were safely transported off the summit by 10 p.m. Both teenagers expressed immense gratitude towards the rescue team, acknowledging how crucial their assistance had been in averting a potentially life-threatening situation.
Reflecting on the incident, Nguyen remarked, “We appreciate their help a lot. It saved our lives potentially.” The experience has left him with profound thoughts about the risks associated with mountain hiking, yet he remains undeterred by the ordeal. “This is definitely not gonna discourage me from going back to mountain climbing,” he stated, although he acknowledged a need for better preparation in the future, particularly concerning emergency supplies.
While this particular adventure ended on a positive note, it serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictability of nature and the importance of being fully equipped before embarking on challenging hikes. As hikers continue to seek out the thrill of conquering peaks, stories like that of Nguyen and Webb underscore the critical role played by rescue services in protecting those who venture into the wild.
As they recover from their experience, the boys seem poised to return to the trails, albeit with a greater emphasis on planning and preparation. Nguyen concluded, “It’ll be a while until I hike anything as severe, and I’ll definitely prepare a bit more especially for emergencies.” Their journey may have taken a harrowing turn, but it has left them with invaluable lessons about resilience and the crucial importance of teamwork in overcoming adversity.
