A humanoid robot has shattered records in the world of athletics, completing a half-marathon in an unprecedented time during the 2026 Beijing E-Town Humanoid Robot Half Marathon. The event took place on Sunday, 19 April, drawing significant attention as the robot, aptly named Lightning, proved to be a formidable competitor.

Developed by the Chinese technology firm Honor, Lightning clocked in at an impressive 50 minutes and 26 seconds for the 13-mile race. This remarkable achievement was reported by state-run media outfit China Daily. The android’s performance not only eclipsed previous robotic records but also surpassed the time set by human athletes. Notably, Olympic medalist Jacob Kiplimo of Uganda completed the Lisbon Half Marathon in 57 minutes 20 seconds just a month prior, highlighting the extraordinary nature of Lightning’s finish.

During the race, Lightning navigated various challenges, including a crash into a barricade, yet still managed to secure the top position. The race saw Honor’s technology excel, as the company’s other entries bagged second and third places, showcasing the advancements in robotics. In contrast to the previous year’s victor, who finished with a time of 2 hours, 40 minutes and 42 seconds, this year’s performance signifies a remarkable leap in development.
The event itself took place in Beijing’s E-Town, where over 100 humanoid robots lined up alongside approximately 12,000 human runners. To ensure safety and avoid collisions, the two groups were allocated separate courses, a decision that reflected careful planning by organisers amidst the blending of human and robotic competitors.
Du Xiaodi, a test development engineer at Honor, shared insights following the race, indicating that the team’s next step is to enhance Lightning’s capabilities even further. He commented on potential future applications of the technologies developed for the robot. “Looking ahead,” Du stated, “some of these technologies might be transferred to other areas. For example, structural reliability and liquid-cooling technology could be applied in future industrial scenarios.”
In an interesting twist, another robot operated remotely also made headlines by finishing the race in 48 minutes. However, due to the event’s scoring rules prioritising autonomous navigation for victory, Lightning remained the official winner. This nuance highlights ongoing discussions on the criteria for competition in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
Prior to the race, the city of Beijing emphasised the significance of the event. In an official statement, the local government described the marathon as a landmark moment for the robotics sector, signifying a transition from experimental phases to real-world applications.
