Good Samaritans Lift Plane to Rescue Critically Injured Pilot Trapped After ‘Terrifying’ Crash

A small plane crash in California has left a 72-year-old pilot in critical condition after the aircraft plummeted into the parking lot of an auto parts store on 20 April. The incident occurred in Pacoima, near the intersection of San Fernando Road and Van Nuys Boulevard, and involved a single-engine Cessna Skyhawk which reportedly struck high-voltage power lines before landing upside down.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), the crash took place shortly before 11 a.m. local time. Eyewitnesses described the moment as harrowing, with multiple bystanders coming together to assist the unconscious pilot, who was the only person on board. The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) confirmed that the pilot had been rescued from the aircraft, which was left mangled and leaking fuel.

Luz De La Cruz, one of the witnesses, recounted the chaotic scene, stating, “It was very terrifying,” as power lines fell around them. She, along with her brother and about ten other individuals, worked frantically to lift the plane off the pilot. They observed sparks from the wires, prompting employees at the nearby O’Reilly’s Auto Parts store to run outside, warning them to be cautious.

The LAPD noted that the Cessna had taken off from Whiteman Airport in Pacoima just minutes before the crash. Flight data indicated that the aircraft was in the air for less than ten minutes and had begun to turn back towards the airport when the incident occurred. Reports suggest the pilot was renting the plane at the time of the crash.

In a statement, the Whiteman Airport Coalition expressed concern over the incident. They mentioned that the airport adheres to strict federal safety regulations, which encompass rigorous requirements pertaining to pilot training, aircraft maintenance, and flight operations. The coalition emphasised the importance of safety and noted that any events of this nature are treated with seriousness.

Following the crash, local authorities put evacuation measures in place for surrounding businesses and residences due to the hazardous conditions stemming from the downed power lines. This precautionary measure ensured the safety of the community while emergency services worked to manage the situation.
