A Florida man has been charged with second-degree murder after allegedly fatally shooting his stepdaughter during a domestic dispute over etiquette. The incident occurred on Sunday morning in Pensacola, Escambia County, leaving the community in shock and mourning the loss of the victim, identified as Alanda Cuffee, aged 39.

James Pelzer, 64, reportedly confronted his stepdaughter in their kitchen before an argument ensued concerning his manners. According to a statement from the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, Pelzer attempted to move past Cuffee, who was standing in the way. During the disagreement, her mother, Yvonne Pelzer, suggested that Cuffee should yield space for James, to which Cuffee reportedly replied, “he could say excuse me.”
Following the exchange, Pelzer left the kitchen momentarily, only to return armed with a handgun. Witness accounts state that he immediately discharged the weapon multiple times in the direction of Cuffee, resulting in her sustaining numerous life-threatening injuries.
Emergency services were alerted to the scene shortly after the shooting occurred, with deputies arriving just before 10 a.m. Upon their arrival, they found Pelzer kneeling outside the house under the watchful eye of another officer who had drawn his firearm. Pelzer expressed remorse, saying, “I messed up bad.”
Inside the premises, deputies discovered Cuffee unresponsive on the kitchen floor, surrounded by a pool of blood. The severity of her injuries was apparent, and it was later confirmed that she had been shot multiple times.
Yvonne Pelzer recounted the horrifying moments leading up to the shooting, explaining that her husband had a documented history of anger management issues. She acknowledged that while Pelzer had made threats in the past referring to using his gun during various arguments, he had never previously acted violently against her or Cuffee.
The firearm used in the incident was located by deputies atop a Bible near the front door, indicating a possible chaotic scene in the home. Eyewitness accounts and the allegations surrounding Pelzer’s behaviour have contributed to the ongoing investigation, as authorities seek to gather further evidence and determine the exact sequence of events.
As the investigation continues, those close to Cuffee have expressed their sorrow at her untimely death. Friends describing her as a selfless individual have shared their memories, highlighting her deep love for her family and friends. One friend told local news station WEAR: “Alanda was selfless. She loved her mother, loved her friends, and loved her family.”
James Pelzer is currently held in custody at Escambia County Jail without bond. His public defender has yet to issue a comment on the accusations against him. As details surrounding the case emerge, the local community is rallying to support Cuffee’s family during this harrowing time.
The narrative of family dynamics, anger, and tragic loss underscores the alarming outcomes that can stem from domestic disputes. As authorities continue to investigate the incident, there is a stark reminder of how swiftly a disagreement can escalate into violence, leaving irreversible consequences for all involved.
