Artem Chigvintsev, a professional dancer known for his participation in the popular television show *Dancing with the Stars*, has opened up about the challenges he faced following his recent divorce from Nikki Garcia, as well as his unexpected departure from the show after an impressive nine seasons. During the interview, Chigvintsev, who is 43, reflected on how he struggled to cope with both the end of his marriage to Garcia and his exit from *Dancing with the Stars*. The dancer described the time as almost surreal, likening it to “a bad dream”. He also mentioned being in “survival mode” after being arrested in August 2024 for an alleged incident of domestic violence. Although the charges were eventually dismissed, the series of events took a significant toll on his mental state.

In his discussion, Chigvintsev pointed out the deep emotional void that being let go from the show created in his life. He emphasised that the impact of losing the role, which had been a substantial part of his life, was profound. “It left a ‘giant void’ that never really goes away,” he explained, highlighting the challenging transition he had to navigate, both personally and professionally.

The second part of the podcast unveiled further insight into Chigvintsev’s perspective on his marriage. He noted that the divorce ultimately had to happen, stating, “I don’t think I would ever [have] left that relationship.” This sentiment is rooted in his upbringing where he was taught to work through difficulties and value family unity. He expressed a desire for their son, Matteo, to have both parents actively involved in his life.
Chigvintsev also touched upon the balance he seeks between his career and parenthood. He acknowledged the difficulties of juggling his responsibilities, stating, “I don’t want to half ass [the show] and I don’t want to half ass [being a father].” He recognised the importance of prioritising Matteo’s well-being, suggesting that he may reconsider his involvement with *Dancing with the Stars* depending on future circumstances.
In another recent podcast episode featuring Garcia, she provided her own perspective on their split. She confirmed that the divorce had no correlation with the earlier incident involving Chigvintsev’s arrest. Garcia clarified that the nature of divorce is simply a legal matter. She went on to reveal the financial settlement of their divorce, which included a payment of $200,000 to Chigvintsev, describing this amount as a “steal”.
Garcia also discussed the unusual nature of the financial judgement, noting that the judge remarked that it was “the first time in all the years I’ve done this where a woman had to pay a man.” This statement highlights the unusual dynamics often associated with divorce settlements, bringing attention to societal norms surrounding financial responsibilities in relationships.
Despite the challenges surrounding their separation, both Chigvintsev and Garcia appear to be making strides in co-parenting their son. Garcia mentioned that they are currently in a “great place” and are successfully working together to provide a stable environment for Matteo. “We are co-parenting… and it makes Matteo’s life so amazing,” she shared, indicating that their mutual focus is on their son’s happiness.
Garcia further expressed a desire to eliminate any negative feelings towards Chigvintsev, emphasising her hope that they can maintain their positive relationship for the sake of their son. She stated, “I don’t want hate towards Artem… I hope we stay in that great place for Matteo because it makes Matteo so happy.”
As Chigvintsev and Garcia navigate their post-divorce lives, it is evident that both are committed to ensuring the well-being of their son while managing their own personal and professional challenges. Their ongoing journey reflects the complexities of modern relationships, particularly in the public eye, and the significance of prioritising family amidst adversity.
