*In a candid discussion, actor Utkarsh Ambudkar shared insights into his journey of sobriety and the significant choice he made to withdraw from the acclaimed musical *Hamilton* during its early stages of development.*
Utkarsh Ambudkar, known for his role in *Ghosts*, recently revisited his decision to step back from *Hamilton*, a moment he now regards as a pivotal point in his quest for sobriety. During an appearance on Andy Lalwani’s *Culture Shock* podcast, Ambudkar detailed how he had initially participated in workshop readings for the musical, which was referred to as *The Hamilton Mixtape* at the time. However, he ultimately withdrew to focus on his health and lifestyle changes.

Ambudkar’s association with *Hamilton* began in the mid-2000s when he collaborated with Lin-Manuel Miranda in the improvisational hip-hop group Freestyle Love Supreme. When Miranda invited him to join the ambitious new project, Ambudkar admitted he did not realise the magnitude of what was being created. “He’s one of my best friends,” he reflected. “So when he said, ‘I’m working on this musical and we have millions of dollars in investors,’ I didn’t view it as a golden opportunity but rather thought I could lend a hand.”
Miranda envisioned Ambudkar as the ideal fit for the role of Aaron Burr, a character that required a combination of singing, rapping, and acting talent. However, Ambudkar spoke openly about his struggle with the demands of the role, stating, “I’m not a musical guy. I need to work 10 times harder than anyone else just to be equal.” Ultimately, he recognised that he could not meet the expectations set for him at that time.
Reflecting on his decision to withdraw, Ambudkar admitted that it was a difficult yet crucial choice. “It was sad. And you’re like, ‘Oh my God, I could have. I could have,’” he remarked, acknowledging the painful nature of stepping away from such a prominent project. However, he also indicated that had he not chosen to change his lifestyle, he might not have survived the pressures of a successful *Hamilton* run due to his struggles with alcohol.
Ambudkar’s journey to sobriety began shortly after he left the project, although he emphasised that his decision was not directly prompted by *Hamilton*. The actor shared, “I made that choice not because of *Hamilton*, though, that’s the romantic version.” Post-withdrawal, his commitment to sobriety has since transformed into a successful career, where he has partnered with Miranda on various projects, including bringing Freestyle Love Supreme to Broadway, which received a special Tony Award.
He has also collaborated with the likes of Miranda on the *Warriors* soundtrack and participated in an Off-Broadway show. Furthermore, Ambudkar worked with Hamilton director Thomas Kail on a Disney+ movie that garnered an Emmy nomination. The support he received from his colleagues during his challenging times was invaluable. “Those people are my family first, and they’re my coworkers second,” he stated, expressing gratitude to Miranda and other friends for prioritising his well-being over professional success.
*Hamilton*, which premiered on Broadway in August 2015 after a successful run at The Public Theater, tells the story of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. The production quickly achieved cultural phenomenon status, winning 11 Tony Awards in 2016, including Best Musical, as well as receiving the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and a Grammy Award. Its original cast members gained widespread recognition, and the show has grossed over $1 billion globally.
Ambudkar has previously discussed his struggles with alcohol use, mentioning in the 2020 documentary *We Are Freestyle Love Supreme* that he felt consumed by his partying lifestyle while the musical was being developed. He characterised himself as “utterly a husk of a person” during that period, feeling unable to perform at the required level.
In a light-hearted reflection on his sobriety, Ambudkar concluded, “When people ask, ‘Hey man, how come you don’t pick up a drink?’ I say, ‘Well, let me tell you about this little thing called *Hamilton*.’ It’s a wonderful, beautiful gift that God gave me. The universe said, ‘Hey, man, if you ever need a reason to stay on a path that is one of integrity, self-care, and being connected to the people around you — it’s there.’”
Utkarsh Ambudkar’s journey serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of prioritising health and well-being, even in the face of significant professional opportunities. His story illustrates that sometimes, stepping away can lead to greater personal growth and eventual success.
