The Real Reason Aidan Quinn Isn’t in “Practical Magic 2”

Aidan Quinn has confirmed that he will not be reprising his role as Gary Hallett in the upcoming sequel to the 1998 cult classic, *Practical Magic*. The actor, who shared the screen with Sandra Bullock in the original film, expressed disappointment during a recent interview at an awards ceremony, stating that he was not approached to return for the highly anticipated sequel, set for release on September 18.

In a conversation with Irish radio station SPIN 1038, the 67-year-old actor clarified that although he would have welcomed the opportunity, he was not invited to reprise his role as Bullock’s love interest. “No, I wasn’t asked. I would have said yes, but I wasn’t asked,” he admitted, reiterating his eagerness to return had he been approached.

Quinn described his experiences while filming the original *Practical Magic*, recalling fond memories of working alongside Bullock and Nicole Kidman. “Oh, yes, of course I would,” he remarked, reflecting on the enjoyable environment during production. “They were both great to work with. Most of my stuff was with Sandy, but they were both phenomenal to work with,” he added, warmly recalling their time together on set.

This news has not only disappointed Quinn but also some fans who still cherish the original film. In a notable parallel, Evan Rachel Wood, who portrayed Sally’s eldest daughter in the first movie, announced last year that she too would not be returning for the sequel. In a candid Instagram statement, Wood expressed her disappointment after revealing that she had not been invited back and that the film would be recasting her character. “I was told they are re-casting. I am sorry to disappoint the fans,” she wrote, emphasising her willingness to return even for a brief cameo.

Despite the absence of these familiar faces, *Practical Magic 2* will see the return of Bullock and Kidman as the Owens sisters. The two actresses previously hinted at the project in a 2024 interview, suggesting they had found a compelling way to reconnect with the enchanting narrative that initially captivated audiences. During CinemaCon in Las Vegas earlier this year, they excitedly announced, “The witches are back!” offering a sneak peek into the film’s enchanting world.

Moreover, a teaser trailer released by Warner Bros. in April has ignited interest among fans, providing an initial glimpse into the sequel’s whimsical atmosphere. While the studio has yet to unveil a detailed synopsis, they did tease that “the magic returns,” indicating a continuation of the original film’s charm.

Alongside Bullock and Kidman, new faces will be joining the cast. Joey King will portray Sally’s daughter, alongside a talented ensemble that includes Maisie Williams, Xolo Maridueña, and Solly McLeod.
