An Australian man has been charged with assaulting a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officer at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) after an altercation concerning a missing passport. Thomas Jesse Bingham, aged 35 from Melbourne, is facing a federal indictment for forcibly assaulting a federal officer, a serious charge under U.S. law.

The incident occurred on March 15 when Bingham approached the TSA officer, referred to in court documents as M.R., seeking assistance regarding his passport. According to a complaint filed in the U.S. District Court of Central California, Bingham confronted the officer in a restroom located between Terminals 6 and 7 at the airport.
At approximately 9:25 a.m., TSA’s Coordination Centre was alerted to the situation after M.R. reported being assaulted. Special agent Alejandro Arrillaga arrived at the scene and learned that Bingham had initiated a confrontation by asking the officer for help regarding his missing passport. M.R. informed Bingham that he was unable to assist, leading to an escalation of events.
The complaint details that after M.R. exited the restroom, Bingham followed him, shouting and physically confronting the officer. Bingham reportedly grabbed M.R. by the arm and forced him against a parked gold cart belonging to United Airlines. The situation worsened as Bingham allegedly attempted to punch M.R. and then forcibly pushed him against a glass wall.
The TSA officer was ultimately able to subdue Bingham by taking him to the ground. Despite this, Bingham reportedly attempted to kick M.R. as he was held down. Following the confrontation, the officer sought medical attention due to pain in his hand and back.
An investigation into the incident revealed Bingham’s travel details; he was due to depart from LAX to Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas. During the inquiry, authorities located Bingham’s carry-on luggage and his passport at a restaurant within Terminal 7, which he had visited prior to the altercation.
On April 15, Bingham was formally charged and, during an arraignment on April 16, he pleaded not guilty to the allegations against him. A jury trial has been scheduled for May 12, where a determination on the charges will be made.
Representatives from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Central California have refrained from providing further comment regarding the case. Meanwhile, enquiries directed to Bingham’s attorney for feedback have not yet yielded a response.
