The community of Toccoa is mourning the loss of Steven Patrick Cullen, a devoted father of three who died in a motorcycle accident on 14 April. Cullen’s life was abruptly cut short when he was struck by a pickup truck while riding his motorcycle at an intersection, an event that has left both his family and friends grappling with grief.
The tragic incident took place on Cornelia Highway, also known as Georgia 365, at approximately 7 a.m. local time. According to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, the driver of the truck, 25-year-old Nathan Michael Meyer from Warner Robins, was heading northbound when he switched lanes in an attempt to turn left onto White Sulphur Road. During this manoeuvre, Meyer collided with Cullen’s motorcycle, which was travelling southbound, resulting in a fatal accident.
Emergency responders pronounced Cullen dead at the scene. Meyer, along with his passenger, emerged from the incident without injuries. Following the crash, Meyer was arrested and now faces significant charges, including second-degree homicide by vehicle and failure to yield while turning left.
Cullen’s brother-in-law, Allen Collins, spoke to a local news outlet about the tragedy. He shared emotional memories, emphasising how close the two were, referring to Cullen as his best friend. Collins expressed his deep sense of loss and highlighted the many ways Cullen was always there for him. In a remarkable display of compassion, he extended forgiveness to Meyer, stating, “People make mistakes. This is something we all got to live with.” Collins encouraged Meyer to understand the weight of the situation, adding, “So just know we forgive you, man.”
Cullen’s family highlighted his role not only as a father but also as a fiancé, with plans to marry. His obituary revealed Cullen worked as a fibre optics inspector for AT&T and had recently received a promotion in his career, showcasing both his professional and personal achievements. Friends and family remember him as the cornerstone of their lives, calling him the “sole provider” for his family, who must now navigate the challenges of life without him.
In a show of community support, nearly £5,000 has been raised through a GoFundMe campaign aimed at assisting Cullen’s family. The funds will help cover funeral expenses and provide support for Cullen’s fiancée, Katelyn, and their children as they cope with this unimaginable loss. The GoFundMe description poignantly states, “Steven was more than just a partner, a father, and a friend; he was the foundation of his family.”
Meyer was taken to Hall County Jail following his arrest but later posted bail set at £16,830 and has since been released. As of now, he has not entered a plea regarding the charges against him, nor has he secured legal representation. Attempts to reach Meyer for comment have been unsuccessful.
