Billy Strings, the celebrated bluegrass musician, has recently announced the postponement of several tour dates following an unfortunate accident that occurred during a live performance. The musician, whose birth name is William Lee Apostol, suffered a broken leg after attempting a skateboarding trick in the backstage area, just moments before he was due to take the stage for his encore at the John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, Virginia, on April 18.

In a candid post on Instagram, Strings detailed the mishap, stating, “Well, can’t say y’all didn’t warn me about screwing around on my skateboard!!” He described the incident, explaining that he had attempted a back 180 trick—something he felt confident doing after many previous attempts. However, he mislanded, resulting in a loud snap that echoed throughout the venue. “I heard it snap over the screaming crowd!! Sounded like a damn 2×4,” he recounted.

Following the injury, Billy Strings quickly assessed the situation and, despite initially considering continuing his tour, realised the importance of recovery. He consulted with medical professionals, friends, and family before concluding that he needed to prioritise healing. “After some long talks… I should probably let this thing heal,” he acknowledged in his post.

In light of the circumstances, Strings has regrettably postponed his upcoming shows. The performance scheduled for April 22 in Charleston, West Virginia, will now take place on August 4. Likewise, a series of shows planned for April 24, 25, and 26 in Fishers, Indiana, will be moved to new dates on August 6, 7, and 8. “Your tickets will still be good for the new dates,” he reassured his fans, adding, “I’m really sorry and I promise I will make it up to you. See you this summer.”
The incident occurred towards the end of an energetic show that had captivated the audience with its vibrant lights and engaging atmosphere. Video footage from the concert captured the moment when Strings collapsed on stage, necessitating assistance from crew members to help him off-stage as concern swept through the crowd. Many fans expressed their heartfelt support and well-wishes on social media following the performance.
Despite the unfortunate turn of events, Billy Strings has chosen to maintain a positive outlook. He shared photos from the concert that highlighted the exhilarating atmosphere of the evening. “I feel like such an idiot. But what are ya gonna do, you know? At least I didn’t hit my head or break my wrist or something,” he reflected, demonstrating a light-hearted approach to a serious situation.
On April 19, just a day after the incident, Strings confirmed his injury with an X-ray photo posted on his social media, clearly showing the fracture to his leg. He also included a setlist from the performance, whimsically featuring one of his songs titled “Leadfoot.”
As everyone anticipates his return to the stage, Strings continues to engage with his supporters, expressing gratitude for their understanding during this challenging time. The postponements highlight the unpredictability of live performances and have served as a reminder of the physical risks musicians can face.
Billy Strings has built a devoted following with his dynamic performances and exceptional musical talent. Fans will surely be eager to welcome him back once he has fully healed. For now, they stand united in their support, wishing him a swift recovery as he prepares to resume his tour later this summer.
