A photographer from Southern Maine, Ruby Jean, is redefining societal perceptions of womanhood through her inspiring initiative, the Goddess Project. This creative endeavour, which began during the COVID-19 pandemic, focuses on capturing the beauty and strength of women over the age of 70 through ethereal photo shoots inspired by her late grandmother.

At 32 years old, Ruby Jean experienced a unique intersection of personal grief and artistic expression after her grandmother’s 90th birthday celebration. The photo shoot, which featured her grandmother adorned in whimsical, goddess-like costumes, subsequently went viral on TikTok, capturing the hearts of audiences worldwide.
“My grandmother was an active woman,” Ruby shared, reflecting on the impact of the pandemic on her grandmother’s life. “COVID stripped her of her vibrant social calendar and left her feeling isolated. She loved dressing up and attending events, and I noticed how much that separation from the world affected her spirit.” This experience served as the catalyst for Ruby’s new project, which ultimately blossomed into something far greater than a tribute to her grandmother.
Prior to the pandemic, Ruby worked as a wedding photographer, but as lockdowns ensued, she found herself with unexpected free time and an urge to create. Following the viral success of her initial TikTok post, Ruby began to reach out to other older women, recruiting them to participate in her Goddess Project and rediscover their sense of self-expression through photography.
The project’s inclusive nature is one of its core pillars. Ruby has sought to remove barriers, offering brand partnerships and fundraising efforts to provide scholarships for women who may not be able to afford a photo shoot. “I realised how much representation means to people,” she explained. “What initially started as a fun project became a source of empowerment for many women.”
Feedback from participants highlights the emotional weight and significance of the experience. “Many women come in feeling hesitant or nervous, while others exude confidence from the start,” Ruby noted. “Regardless of how they feel at first, they always leave the session with a sense of power and beauty.” The photos often transform into cherished family heirlooms, encapsulating not just the subjects’ appearances but their essence and experiences.
Ruby emphasised the wisdom that many of these women carry with them. “They have stories that are extraordinary, laden with experiences most people cannot imagine,” she said. “Hearing them share their lives, filled with laughter and positivity, is nothing short of uplifting.” Each session aims to capture not merely a photograph but an exchange of narratives that further enriches the participants’ lives.
The success of the Goddess Project has inspired Ruby to delve deeper into conversations surrounding ageism. She has enrolled in courses that enable her to understand the societal implications of ageing, and she volunteers to provide transportation for older adults to attend medical appointments. These actions serve to enhance her understanding of the hurdles faced by elderly individuals in today’s world.
Ruby Jean’s journey has undoubtedly been a transformative one, shaping her outlook on life and the importance of representation. “It’s transformed my life in ways I never expected,” she stated, regarding both the project and the connections formed with participants.
In a culture that often marginalises older individuals, Ruby’s Goddess Project stands as a beacon of hope and empowerment. It celebrates the beauty of ageing, encouraging society to embrace and honour the stories of women who have weathered the storms of life with grace. As this initiative continues to flourish, it not only uplifts the spirits of those involved but also cultivates a broader discourse on the significance of age diversity in the arts and beyond.
