Shayla Talei, a 31-year-old mother of two, has gained a following of 249,000 on TikTok, where she openly discusses her life with multiple chronic conditions. Diagnosed with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) at the age of 17, Shayla’s health journey took another challenging turn when she developed gastroparesis, a disorder that impairs her stomach’s ability to process solid food properly. Through her viral videos, she sheds light on the realities of living with such debilitating illnesses.

Gastroparesis significantly impacts Shayla’s daily routine, effectively leaving her stomach paralysed. This means traditional eating is no longer an option for her. Instead, she relies on Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN), a medical procedure that delivers nutrients directly into her bloodstream via a central vein near her heart. This method of feeding became necessary after a year of struggling to maintain adequate calorie intake, during which Shayla faced severe pain and significant weight loss.
The decision to begin TPN was not made lightly. Shayla recalls the discussions leading up to the choice, noting that TPN is typically regarded as a last resort in nutritional care. “There are numerous risks associated with it,” she explains, reflecting on the myriad challenges of managing her health. She was officially put on TPN in July 2025, after a conventional tube feeding method failed to provide sufficient nutrition.
Shayla’s condition is rooted in CRPS, a chronic pain disorder that causes intense pain in the limbs and can arise following an injury, surgery, or other health crises. Her experience exemplifies how chronic pain can affect various body systems, including the digestive tract. Initially unaware that her pain condition could influence her ability to eat, Shayla soon recognised the severity of her situation when simple actions like eating or drinking led to profound discomfort, including nausea and vomiting.
The extent of her challenges became evident as she struggled to eat adequately, losing around 100 pounds in just eight months as she searched for answers. “I desperately wanted nourishment in my body,” she recalls, explaining the toll that malnutrition took on her health and overall wellbeing. Hospitalisations were frequent as doctors worked to understand her condition and find appropriate care.
Managing TPN has now become a part of Shayla’s daily life. She carries a heavy backpack that contains the necessary equipment for her nutritional needs, which she showcases in her social media content. In her videos, she contrasts the high cost of her medical nutrition with the significantly lower prices of traditional meals that she prepares for her husband and children.
The financial burden of her treatment is substantial. Shayla revealed that the cost of her TPN, including supplies and medications, amounts to approximately $14,000 per week, an amount that comes with considerable strain even with insurance coverage. “Before insurance, my TPN costs around $1,000 a day,” she notes, adding that while insurance assistance is invaluable, it does not eliminate her ongoing medical debt.
Shayla’s commitment to sharing her journey on social media is driven not only by a desire to create awareness but also by a sense of community. Her openness about the realities of living with chronic illness resonates with many, as she continually provides insight into her medical routine and health management strategies.
Through her platform, Shayla Talei continues to inspire and educate others, demonstrating resilience in the face of adversity while advocating for a deeper understanding of chronic health conditions. Her engaging and informative content serves as a testament to her strength and the importance of support for those living with similar challenges.
As she navigates daily life with their unique set of hurdles, Shayla remains determined to shine a light on the often-overlooked aspects of living with chronic illness, contributing to a growing conversation around health awareness and empowerment in the digital age.
