Amazon has confirmed the death of a warehouse employee at its Troutdale distribution centre in Oregon, following an incident on April 6. The worker, whose identity has not been disclosed, collapsed during their shift at approximately 2 p.m. Initial reports suggest the employee had a preexisting medical condition and, despite attempts to revive them, they tragically passed away.

In the aftermath of the incident, allegations emerged stating that employees were ordered to continue working while emergency responders attended to their colleague. Some workers reportedly expressed a desire to assist but were allegedly told to remain at their stations. In response to these claims, Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel categorically described the information circulating as “misinformation.”

According to Nantel, three members of the warehouse staff who were trained in CPR performed lifesaving measures. This included administering chest compressions and using an automated external defibrillator until emergency medical services arrived at the scene. To maintain the dignity of the employee and ensure the safety of others on site, the area was cordoned off during the emergency response.
The company stated that employee safety is their utmost priority. Nantel reiterated their commitment to ensuring that all necessary assistance was provided to the employee while maintaining a focus on the response efforts, rather than concentrating on evacuating other parts of the warehouse in the immediate aftermath of the emergency.
Following the incident, Amazon took steps to support its workforce. Employees were sent home with pay for the rest of the day and were offered the option to take time off the following day should they require it. Nantel mentioned that grief counselling services were made available for any staff members who wished to speak with a professional.
“On-site grief counselors were provided to anybody who chose to come to work and needed them,” Nantel explained. The company has also reached out to the family of the deceased employee, extending various resources as they navigate this difficult period.
The situation has drawn attention to workplace safety and employee wellbeing at Amazon’s facilities, as workers continue to voice concerns about the atmosphere and conditions of the working environment. While Amazon asserts that they acted in accordance with safety protocols, the public response to the incident underscores the complexities surrounding workplace dynamics during emergencies.
The Multnomah County Medical Examiner’s Office has commenced an investigation into the cause of death, aiming to provide clarity on the circumstances surrounding this somber event. As more information becomes available, both Amazon and local enforcement agencies are expected to face scrutiny regarding how such incidents are managed going forward.
As the company grapples with this tragic loss, the wider community has also rallied in support of the family, emphasizing the importance of compassion and care in times of grief. While operational matters resume, the memory of the deceased employee will linger in the hearts and thoughts of colleagues and loved ones alike.
