Former Va. Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax and Wife Cerina Were in ‘Messy Divorce,’ Living in Separate Rooms Before Murder-Suicide, Police Claim

In a tragic incident reported on April 16, former Virginia Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax is believed to have shot his wife, Cerina Fairfax, before taking his own life. Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis provided insights into the couple’s turbulent relationship, indicating that they were undergoing a complicated divorce process prior to the fatal event.

Chief Davis noted that the Fairfax couple was living together despite being separated, sharing the home in Annandale, Virginia. He detailed that divorce proceedings were already underway, with important court appearances anticipated in the near future. “This has been an ongoing domestic dispute surrounding what seems to be a complicated or messy divorce,” Davis remarked at a press briefing outside their residence.

Alarming details emerged regarding a previous police call to the Fairfax home in January, when Justin Fairfax had falsely reported an assault against him by his wife. The claims were dismissed after police reviewed footage from security cameras installed by Cerina, which contradicted Justin’s allegations. Chief Davis pointed out that these cameras were still operational during the tragic incident that unfolded on Thursday morning.

Tragically, the couple’s teenage children were present in the home at the time of the shootings. Following the incident, their son contacted emergency services just after midnight. “We’ll do everything we can for them,” Davis assured, indicating the police department’s commitment to support the children through this harrowing time.

The police chief also mentioned that Justin Fairfax had recently received paperwork related to the divorce proceedings. It is assumed that the contents may have sparked the violent confrontation, although investigations are ongoing. “I know he was served some paperwork recently. Apparently, the paperwork indicated when he was next to appear in court,” Davis explained.

Justin Fairfax served as lieutenant governor from 2018 to 2022 and was seen as a prominent figure within the Virginia Democratic Party. His political career, however, was marred by allegations of sexual assault from earlier in his life, which he categorically denied. Despite facing these serious accusations, he remained in office and later ran for governor in 2022, where he finished fourth during the Democratic primary.

Meanwhile, Cerina Fairfax, the victim and Justin’s estranged wife, was a practising dentist. The combination of their professional lives and familial responsibilities seemingly contributed to the strain on their marriage, leading to the tragic resolution of their domestic disputes.
