Born in Texas, Aundi’s early life was overshadowed by medical doubts. Doctors expressed scepticism about her potential to walk, talk, or live independently. Reflecting on her childhood, Aundi recalls, “I did not walk unassisted until I was four years old.” Before that milestone, she navigated her world primarily by crawling and using a walker. Reminiscing about those formative years, she emphasises the tremendous effort it took to reach each developmental goal.
Her life took a significant turn during her fourth grade when she underwent hamstring lengthening surgery. This operation allowed her to straighten her knees, an adjustment that not only facilitated her ability to walk more effectively but also resulted in her experiencing a growth spurt of two to three inches. “That experience was truly life-changing,” she stated, marking it as a pivotal moment in her journey toward independence.

With each step, Aundi began to dismantle the expectations that had been placed upon her, ultimately leading her to graduate high school and pursue a career in education. Reflecting on the irony of teaching the same grade in which she experienced her surgery, she noted the profound significance of this full-circle journey. Her commitment to education exemplifies her desire to inspire others and support students facing their own hurdles.

In 2020, Aundi married her high school sweetheart after reconnecting years later. Their relationship blossomed, and they began to discuss starting a family, a decision filled with both anticipation and trepidation. “The emotions were a mishmash of joy and fear,” she admitted. Previous experiences, including a miscarriage, amplified her apprehension, and she described the uncertainty of her path to parenthood as overwhelming.
The physical challenges associated with her cerebral palsy were paramount in her mind during this new chapter. Aundi expressed concern about her ability to carry a child safely to term, especially as she faced changes in balance. “I worried about whether I would be able to manage physically during pregnancy,” she explained. Nevertheless, with the support of her family and healthcare team, she remained focused on her goal of a healthy pregnancy.
As her pregnancy progressed, Aundi concentrated on her health and wellbeing, maintaining open communication with her doctors while also tuning into her body’s needs. “My biggest hope was simply to have a healthy baby and to experience motherhood fully,” she shared in hopes for her future.
Today, Aundi’s dream of motherhood has materialised, and she speaks passionately about the joys and challenges that accompany it. “The most rewarding part of becoming a mum so far has been simply experiencing motherhood,” she says. Her journey has helped her appreciate each moment, particularly in light of her past struggles.
As she continues to embrace the demands of motherhood, Aundi acknowledges the persistent challenges but asserts that these do not define her capabilities. “There’s something really powerful about caring for my baby day to day and realising, ‘I’m doing this,’” she reflects. Aundi sees her role as a mother not just as another milestone achieved but as an embodiment of her resilience and personal growth.
Aundi’s narrative champions the message that having a disability does not limit one’s capabilities. “Having a disability doesn’t make you less capable; it just means you may have to adapt and figure out what works best for you,” she emphasises. Through her story, she aims to inspire others, proving that with perseverance and a strong support system, challenges can be transformed into triumphs.
